Re: New Year 20101

The main square in the old town should be shakin on new years eve---there are plenty of places close by to celebrate---don't stay in one place all night!
Check out some of the reviews here at VT for individual places worthy of checking out-----Good hunting!

Travel Tips for Bratislava

Money matters

by Dabs

Even though Slovakia is part of the European Union, it has not adopted the Euro as it's currency, the Slovak koruna is the official currency although if you are coming in from a country in the European Union that uses Euros as currency you will find that many places will take Euros as payment although perhaps not at an advantageous exchange rate.

We found that there were ATM machines everywhere in Bratislava, I was surprised by how many of them we saw in the old town area. We did take out 1000sk (about $50US) to get us through the day, using it to buy souvenirs, stop at the grocery store, for the bus and for the train. Like all the other ATMs we used on this trip, it spit out the whole amount in one large bill so we broke it at a grocery store. Credit cards are also widely accepted, we used ours for lunch.

Prices were not as cheap in Bratislava as I would have thought, prices were comparable to Prague for food and transportation but cheaper than Vienna.

Bratislava

by prleprle

Friend told me that Bratislava change a lot during the last few years and that facades of old houses are presented in their full glory. I had chance to visit Slovakia few weeks ago but didn't go.... Really would like to viosit that all again! You also should visit this very interesting capital and country. Being there with friends and exploring old part of town!

Historical Bratislava

by vladoj

Try to get to St.Martin's Dome, which is at this time fully reconstructed inside. There are many other signs of history however in Bratislava downtown:

Wine

by micas_pt

Bratislava has a long tradition of grapes, vineyards and wine. Some say that wine tradition is as old as city itself. Around Bratislava can be seen many vineyards. In Old town several wine bars and cellars, where wine tasting is available, can easily be found.

The New Bridge - Tower

by yooperprof

The New Bridge of Bratislava is certainly very impressive from an engineering point of view. I admire the elegant beauty of its design, the way that it solves its particular topographical requirements with admirable finesse and precision. It's easily one of the most visually striking modern bridges I've seen. I didn't get a chance to visit the tower - doesn't it look like a flying saucer in this view?
