staying in bratislava area

by phedro

Hi!
I'm coming to Slovakia at the end of august. I want to spend a couple of days visiting Bratislava before enjoying the Tatra mountains, but I'd prefer to find a pension in the surrounding area, and to take my car just to get to town but not inside town. Will I find parkings, maybe near bus or train stations?
thanks for your suggestions!

Generally there is no big issue to find parking place in Bratislava, especially if you are not going downtown. By train/bus you mean public transportation to get to the city? Good tip can be the shopping center Aupark, from where you can reach city easily by foot, it's free and it is rarely totally full.

Aupark woul be a good tip, it is free of charge for two hours I think. If you come to Bratislava in Saturday or Sunday, you need not be affraid of the traffic and go to the center by your car. Maybe this page will help you :

Travel Tips for Bratislava

Old & new

by ema522

Bratislava is a short day trip from Vienna - it takes a barely a couple of hours on the train. The old town center is historic, charming, & making a comeback from years of Communist neglect. However, if you go to the castle & look out over the river, you'll get an eyeful of how the Communists ruined Eastern Europe under the guise of "progress": mile after mile of horrid concrete block apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Sadly, this is probably where most of the citizens still live.

Bratislava Tip

I was in Bratislava about three weeks before Christmas and there was a nice atmosphere. There was a Christmas market in the centre where you could buy gluhwein, hamburgers and saucises and X-mass stuff.

Slovak National Theatre

by Skipka

Slovak National Theatre established in 1920 is highly visited also by Austrians because the performances and operas are cheaper than in Vienna ;) and later they can go for dinner or supper ;) of course cheaper than in Vienna, too. But it is worth to see anyway ;)
In front of the Opera house in Ganymed's Fountain.
You can easily find it right in the center near the Raddison Carlton Hotel

The Green House

by Skipka

Zeleny dom alias The Green House is situated right on the Main Square near the Old Town Hall. Before building the Old Town Hall this house was the main place in the town where decisions were made. And there is a story that the house is haunted by the victims of wrong decisions.. I don't know because recently it is the seat of the bank so probably there will be more ghosts LOL :)

Slavin Memorial

by Vlasta

As far as Soviet monuments go this is quite pleasant, perhaps due to its location on a grassy plane high above the city. Well worth the climb, Slav?n features a cemetery filled with the graves of fallen soldiers (some of which are still adorned with fascinating photographs of Mother Russia's fighting young men), a 37m high column crowned with a soldier crushing a swastika, and a gaggle of young Slovaks paying respect by grinding on the monument with their skateboards. Unveiled in 1960, this is one reminder of the socialist past destined to be around for a while.
