Quite poor hotel where they even have a sign at reception that presence of cockroaches should not alarm guests. Rooms are very hot and look like they haven't been renovated since the hotel was opened. Area is ugly where instead of something interesting you are surrounded with bunch of residential buildings. There is one modern church and that would be about it. Even shops are non existent. You can get to the city by tram or taxi (~$10).

Unique Quality: Food at the hotel restaurant is satisfactory.

City Hotel Bratislava

Stayed in business room - around 90 euros per night.

Positive points:

- everything in the minibar is free (!!!) - including wine and beer
- free broadband in room (you need to bring your own cable though - they don't have any)
- free wifi hotspot in the lobby
- good cafe in the lobby - nice coffee
- big improvement over the last few years - they are at least trying

Negative points:

- location is awful, middle of a housing estate - taxi about 200Sk to the centre
- Paradise club on first floor - few girls, few customers, have to pay for entrance (even if you're a hotel guest)
- restaurant is awful -
- service mentality of some staff (though not all) is definitely from the Communist era
- annoying voice in the lift telling you to mind the doors (after they have already closed) and to have a nice day
- no shops/restaurants nearby
- system for room service doesn't work. You cannot call the restaurant direct to order food, you have to call the reception and try to explain to them what you want (better in Slovak or they may not understand). If you're lucky they'll ask the restaurant to call you back, if not they'll ask you to another number which doesn't work..

by tmkelly about City Hotel

The City Hotel Bratislava, while recently updated and renovated (mostly), is a bit too far from the Center--11 tram stops--to be worth staying in. The breakfast is ample and the staff generally helpful, but it is in a neighborhood of apartment buildings and office buildings (Ruzinov) and so has not neighborhood appeal at all. Try to stay closer to the Center.

Ahoj,
Hotel Kiev is one of the hotels of comparatively lower prices in the centre, but it´s because it offers a lower standard of equipment (e.g. no television, old towels (I mean the colours are washed out),..). It´s an old hotel from the communists´ era and was not completely renovated by now, but most of the facilities has been changed. I think if you are looking something "good and cheap" as you write, you might be satisfied with Kiev. Try to look at www.ubytujsa.sk where you can find more hotels. For example City Hotel Bratislava, Sorea (www.sorea.sk), Hotel Plus Bratislava, Tatra Bratislava or ibis Bratislava Centrum are some of good and cheaper hotels.
Have a nice stay in Slovakia afterwards.
Best regards,

Neli

I stayed at Gremium Penzion at Gorkeho 11, right in the heart of the old town. An upstairs place under an eatery, very nice. 920 to 1350SK$, 1 Euro = 40sk according to the Lonely planet. Great bar back towards the centre is the Peoples Lounge, the staff gave some great tips on what to see in the region. I remember going to a soviet style hotel, I don't know if this is the Kiev but it was dive for what they wanted, may have changed since Sept 2003 though.
