Railway Station >>> Airport

by Matyas

Hi all!

I need to go to the airport from the railway station. I've checked the timetables but seems I may not be able to do it.

So I'm arriving to Bratislava hl. st. at 08:00 (hopefully) and must be at the airport no later than 09:20. Do I have a good chance to catch that goddam plane?
Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

There are direct bus from Main railway station to the airport (#61), but it takes app. 30 minutes to get there, so be prepared to run. It stops on your right when you get off the train station

We took a limo from our hotel just outside of old Bratislava to the airport. It took a long time because the traffic was not good. The traffic was congested and slow on the highway and this is the route you would have to take, so although we didn't start at the same point as you, you would have to take more or less the same trip. So, in answer to your question, if 9.20 is the latest you can get to the airport i.e. that is when the check-in closes, then there is just a slim chance that you will have time. However, you will have to get off the train (and my recollection of coming from Vienna is that the train stopped quite a walk from the exit of the station) and then get to the taxi ahead of everyone else.......which will take up at least 10 minutes.

Bus 61 leaves more or less every 10 minutes from the station to the airport.

Timetable:

It takes about 30 minutes.

Assuming your train is not delayed I don't see a problem.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that you have to buy a bus ticket before boarding plus you have to pay for each piece of baggage and buy a ticket for the baggage (could be wrong on both accounts) but in any case, this will also eat up time. Perhaps someone who has used pubic transport in Bratislava can elaborate.

http://www.bratislavaguide.com/public-transport-bratislava is a very good site with good instructions about using the bus system.

www.panorama.sk/bratislava-transportation-guide has the explanation about paying for luggage under "local transportation in bratislava"

Dear Jack, hawkhead, J!

Thanks a million. Great stuff. I bet there are couple of stands around selling tickets so that I can purchase the bus ticket(s) in no time and take the 61. Sure it will be risky but this is the only option according to my current travel plan. Thank youuuu again!!

but by cursing it ahead of time....that may be just what you end up with.

Re: Railway Station >>> Airport

by delcity

you did not say a plane to where. looks like you have a better than 50 percent chance of catching the plane. but if bratis is like many airports your checked luggage may miss the flight when it is less than 30 min to departure.

I would get a cab and not risk waiting for the bus. The taxi was about 15 minutes and I think it cost us 20 euros - that was in May.

Travel Tips for Bratislava

Wonderfully worn streets

by acemj

While I walked around some of more abandoned edges of the Old Town, it occurred to me that Bratislava was once the second city of the former Czechoslovakia. It's apparent that there have been some extensive renovations in the last ten years or so, but in spots, it's still clear that this place was sometimes overlooked in favor of the more glamorous capital city of Prague.

Wind rose

by codrutz

I don't know if this the actual English term for this but we called it literally the rose wind, the sign that shows you north pole, south pole and all sort of directions and distances.

This is the wind rose in Bratislava, cleverly mounted in the pavement just below a passage under a clock tower.

Napoleon like statue in main square

by codrutz

This is the first statue you will probably notice and take picture with. It is in the main square so you can't miss it. It stands behind a bench, inviting you to sit and get your friends to take a funny pictures of you with "Napoleon" :)

Academia Istropolitana

by gosiaPL

It's definitely worth noting this important building in Slovakia's history and culture: this was the country's first university, founded in 1465. Now it houses the School of Visual Arts.
It is in Venturska St. (extension of Michalska St.)

Museum of Bratislava

by Skipka

Museum is inside the building of old Town Hall next to the Primate palace. The exhibitions don't deal just with Bratislava but there are tons of interesting things such as cellar with torture instruments :) huaaa
