Bratislava and Beyond?

by Barton68

10 Years of Prague, now Vienna at Christmas, Hotels, Restaurants, further a field.
Posted: Fri October 22, 2010 12:17 PM UTC
Hi,

after 10 years of staying in Prague at Christmas, we have decided to move on and perhaps Bratislava.

We loved Prague due the beautiful art nouveau buildings and good food with cheap restaurants.

We would like to stay in the old-centre of Bratislava, as we used to stay in the old square in Prague (Cerny Slon). Any ideas for a nice family run older hotel?
Also, any tips on good local restaurants with good basic menu's?

Further a field....
Is there any towns worth staying a night or 2 outside of Bratislava with Christmas Markets, art nouveau architecture, sights etc?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions.

Thank you for any replies,

Mark.

Hi I guess the most of art nouveau buildings in Slovakia - except for Bratislava - are in my hometown Piestany.
One of the typical buildings is The Hotel Thermia Palace http://www.spapiestany.sk/en/hotel/thermia-palace-general-information.html

I guess, you could like The Hotel Marrols http://www.hotelmarrols.sk/ in the old town Bratislava.

Travel Tips for Bratislava

The old Slovak national theatre.

by imran8852

While on your way to the Danube river, You could stop along the Old Slovak National Theater for some pictures. Around the old theater, There are some coffee shop and small booths selling souvenir for sale that's relatively cheaper compared at the railway station. Cheap cigarettes, nice coffee and friendly people!

This website is really excellent and there are tons of photos to motivate you to come down here. ;)) So, check out the Bratislava sections and also ULUV Crafts, there can be seen our local folk art.

I hope I will be able to prepare such great page myself soon.

Can you see it?

by manuelEB

I mean the soldier crushing the swastika... I took this picture using the poor zoom lens of my expensive camera, and my more expensive arms but all I can see is a sort of flag up there. The good news, then, is that I have to go back to Bratislava a check this. I want to see the swastika crushed!!!!
The building in first plane is the "Paluday Palace", the seat of Consulare Section of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And if you dissagree with this piece of information go and tell that to Sylvia... and check the calendar and your wrist watch. You will be one of the luckies that know when you will die. (-;

By the way, the slovaks have 8 days in the week. Paluday is between Saturday and Sunday. (-;

Only Surviving City Gate

by Ekaterinburg

Michael's gate is the focal point of the street which bears the same name. It stands out very clearly though, its 59 metre -high tower and copper statue of St Michael,towering above the neighbouring buildings.This is one of four original gates which were situated along the ramparts of the town. These medieval ramparts were of course wooden and only small fragmnets of them still survive. Michael's is the only one of the four gates which survived and it's a really impressive mixture of Gothic and Baroque architectural features.

The gate now houses a museum which mainly features medieval weapons and information about the town fortifications. This entire street is one of the most beautiful in the old town, with a string of baroque palaces, many of them now part of the university.

The guide on the train tour told us that local students have a custom regarding Michael's Gate. Apparently it is bad luck to speak as you go through it and the penalty is that you will fail your exams. True ? I don't know, I'm just a gullible tourist who believes everything she's told.

The Old Town Hall

by Skipka

The Old Town Hall was the most important building in the town :) no wonder ... there is a big museum inside and has a lot of exhibition such as about history of Bratislava and Slovak history in all, seasonable exhibitions such as the last one was about Kokeshi dolls from Japan... In the cellars is the exhibition of torture methods so it is the ebst part of the whole museum. :)
Tower of the town hall is famous for its laser shows in the summer and more than hundred melodies played every hour. ;)
