I would have stayed at the Carlton but for the lack of last minute rooms available at less than rack-rate - having previously paid EUR 60 a night for a room in the Carlton compared with more than EUR 75 for a room at the Park Inn (without breakfast). It was very convenient for my final port of call for an evening out with friends - the Fashion Club - which is in the basement. Unfortunately I found that from my third floor room I could still hear some of the sounds from the basement through the ventilation system. The fittings were looking relatively tired and the hotel could do with a refit - I think it has not been refitted for a while. The bed was comfortable and there was a flat panel TV in my room. However some of the fittings (e.g. bedside lamps) had definitely been in situ for a long time. The bathroom was adequate - with shampoo and soap dispensers rather than individual bottles. The loo was separate from the bathroom.
Unique Quality: The location was very central, being on Rybne namestie and about 100m from the Carlton hotel. The Fashion Club in the basement was a good place to end up - although that is another review.
Good hotel located in the old town. Walking distance to every spot. About a 100Eur a night, which is pretty much in line with all hotel of this class in the city.
100m from the Carlton for half the price... and still a decent standing.
Probably stayed here 5/6 times in 90s, when it was one of very few "western" standard places.
Very convenient for city centre, opera, River Danube etc.
Food fine, rooms good value.
Unique Quality: Location
Although this hotel does have an excellent location, I was disappointed with the service the hotel offered. For a four star hotel at this price, it did not meet my expectations. There were several charges added on to the hotel, including a charge for breakfast after the hotel staff told us breakfast was "free." The hotel purports to be a four-star, yet there was no manager on staff who could address any customer concerns, in essence making it impossible to settle any discrepancies. The hotel would only sell Slovak koruna, but would not buy them back at the end of your trip. Overall this hotel did not live up to its cost or billing as a four-star. The service is not there. I would recommend staying at the Radisson SAS Carlton, which is just down the road, is very nice with an excellent restaurant, and is located right next to the United States Embassy.
Stayed here for a couple of days for a European City Break. Hotel is right in the centre of Bartislava Old Town and is by the river - although there is a major road between it & the shore front. Rooms were simple & clean, albeit fairly dated but the public areas were very lovely and looked recently refurbed when we stayed (Mar 2006)
Has a full gym with swimming pool which looked great and we went for a massage treatment whilst there....recommondation is not to! Massage was fine, but the 'treatment room' was a bedroom overlooking the main highway into town & directly onto the pedestrian route under it and has no nets / blinds, so when asked to strip you are practically performing a show for anyone walking past! This may have improved by now but was something which wasn't great.
Service was good though and the staff were all friendly and helpful and gave great recommendations for restaurants & bars in the town.
Lovely hotel and very well located for seeing all the main sights.
The room was very comfortable and the room service was very speedy also.
Make sure you get a river view as its lovely when you are in your room to look out over the river and seeing everything that's going on - I got some lovely photos of the view from the room.
For a real treat have a meal in the Romeo & Juliet Italian restaurant in the hotel - its really quiet and the food and service was excellent.
The room has its own electronic safe which is essential and also a hairdryer is provided but I would recommend that you take your own.
One final tip - I sent postcards from the hotel reception to home but they never arrived.
Directions: Overlooking The River Danube
I did not stay at this Hotel so cannot comment on its quality, but can vouch for its excellent central position right on the edge of the old town.
No public transport needed for tourist sights if you stay here, all very walkable.
Directions: By Novy Most and river danube.
Its a newer hotel across the street from danube and at the edge of the center where all the action is. The rooms are nice, staff friendly, and breakfast is nice. It was very quiet in the hotel. Across from the hotel is a slovakian restaurant where I had Halusky and Boravicka (a local brandy). The hotel also has nice restaurants but I didnt eat there.
Directions: Across the street from river Danube.
Now, why did they have to build such an ugly hotel right on the riverfront? Don't get me wrong - I'm sure it's a perfectly functionable place, and it wouldn't be at all out of place in Omaha or Spokane or Tuscaloosa. But it seems absolutely out of place in Slovakia. Such an important location is such a beautiful old city deserves a more sensitive building.
Directions: Too close to the river for my confort
Hotel DANUBE is conveniently situated in both the heart of business district while at the same time surrounded by historical site of Old Town. It is a hotel with a view on Bratislava's castle.
Directions: Directly in the Old town centre.
I will be in Bratislava in July for about 1 week. I am thinking about staying at Hotel Danube but would like to know what others think about this hotel. I am getting a 20% discount from them. Are there better hotels nearby in the same price range?
hotel devin is just next and is slightly cheaper (approx 6000skk/double room)
