Bratislava's cheapes hostel

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 1, 2010

I did stay in red star hostel this summer ! and it was very good ! Staff was very friendly and helpfull , the location is not the best but it's twice cheaper than hostels in city center !!!
There is tennis, volleybal court wich u can use , and security is on very High level, i recommend this hostel !

Unique Quality: They have something called unofficial Pub Cralw, wich is gathering people in one place and then they can go party together ! So it's very easy to meet other people here.

I was few days ago in hostel Red Star in Bratislava, was preety ok, cheap, staff was helpful. This is a student's house during the year, the surrounding is green, they've got tennis and basketball courts. I was satisfied.

Directions: Botanicla Garden

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)

First of all the hostel is in a very bad location, and it is on the third floor of an 11 story hostel which appears to only cater to Slovakians. When I walked in and told the person in the lobby I had a reservation they said "no you don't, you're at the wrong place". I showed them the map I downloaded and they said, "this place is rubbish, you don't want to stay here". After walking around the block and going back to the building two more times I was FINALLY directed to a separate temporary looking desk for the Red Star Hostel.

Things the website/flyers claim this place has, but in fact do not exist:
bar/restaurant, luggage storage, fun. It was physically impossible to meet people here. Unless you speak Slovakian, and even then all the Slovaks were part of travel groups.

The "bed" was nothing more than 3 thin couch cushions which would separate from each other as you slept.

The employees were very nice and helpful though, but had no idea where the nearest ATM was.

I do appreciate the irony that their motto is "the only iron curtain is between us and the boredom" and this place was horridly boring.

Unique Quality: I'm pretty sure they employed blind people to decorate and clean this place in the '70's. I don't think anything has been done to the facilities since then.

Directions: Way the hell out of town to the west.
