Statues and Monuments
by kit_mc
Keep an eye out as you stroll through the city for the various monuments, statues and other markers to the city's past, to Slovakia as a nation and to it's heroes.
Little monuments were all over Kosice, markers on buildings indicating this or that event or national hero. Remember, Kosice is where the first government of Czechoslovakia was formed as the Second World War came to an end, so it's bound to be a proud city.
I would have loved to have known what some of these things marked, but again, my non-existent Slovak put a stop to any in-depth cultural exchange! These types of statues for me are actually a style I really like, although for some they represent a communist past that may less savoury.
This particular statue was in the park on the way from Hlavna Ulici to the train station.
Local currency: Euro
by HORSCHECK
Slovakia joined the European Union (EU) on the 1st of May 2004 and on the 1st of January 2009 Slovakia even became a member of the Eurozone. This means that nowadays the Euro is the official currency in the country.
When I was in Kosice, Slovakia still had the Slovak Crown (Slovenska Koruna) as official currency. The Slovak Crown was subdivided into 100 Heller (Halier).
You can get your local money with a credit or debit card from cash points or just by exchanging your local money at one of the many exchange offices.
Daily Market
by lmkluque
Of all the places I saw, this Flower Market seemed to be a living tribute to the life and times my grandparents experienced before they left Slovakia. Off Hradbová ulica at Dominikanské námestie, in the square near the Dominican Church you'll find flower sellers. Every morning the square hosts a flower market where nice, old ladies in traditional costumes sell their wares. It was like walking into a medieval market, and for some reason it "spoke" to me.
This was the place we stopped to buy flowers. There were many varieties--not of course as many as I'd find at home, but different and pretty. We walked along the stalls and my relatives suggested white Chrysanthemums, appropriate, they told me, to take to the loved one's grave.
Kosice - castle ruins 900 y. old
by annamariana
Kosice - castle ruins are close to the look out tower of Kosice city.
In 13th century it was the largest casle in whole Slovakia /a part of the former Austria Hungary empire/.
The castle ruins are for more 200 years older then the oldest buildings in Kosice centre.
Water Fountains.......
by coceng
I remember as we arrived at this small park in the middle of Kosice town, a worker was just mending the fountain.
Then, came out, spurting the water from the beautful fountain !
Situated between the St. Elizabeth's Cathedral and the Theatre, it is supposed to be a singing fountain but I couldn't hear any sounds...
There are also a few benches for relaxing in the small park.
Each hour old Glockenspiel rings different song.
