In 2004 there was a huge storm that flattened most trees in the High Tatry. Wide areas still look very bare with knocked over trees. There is still a lot of work to be done. It looks not very appealing but it shouldn't stop you from visiting.
Tatranska Lomnica is an excellent base for hiking in the High Tatras. It's a short walk from the town to three trails - a green trail to Skalnate Pleso, a blue trail to the Studena Dolina valley above Hrebienok and a yellow trail to the east. We took the blue trail on our second day and did a 2 hour hike through the woods to the Studena Dolina. This is a fairly easy trail though there wasn't too much to see near the start. We walked here from Stary Smokovec while exploring the region for a couple of days in pre-season.
Tatranska Lomnica was founded in 1892 as part of the Velka Lomnica district. It's a recreational base for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
Skiing skiing.. Nice moments ! You know - flying like a bird is not possible, but if you'll try to ski very fast, it really does something in your head. And - listen Robert Miles cosmo music when you are going to mountains - amazing music !!
