The lakes are fed by underground snow and rain water that come from the Mangart chain in the rear. Even the link between the Upper and Lower lake is subterranean.
The chain around the lake , from Ponza Grande (2274 m.) to Mangart (2677 m.), is formed by carbonated rock (dolomite rock and limestone).
