Travel from Ljubljana to Opatija

by berbell

I would like to travel from Ljubljana to Opatija in mid July. I think there is a train that goes twice a day but does anyone know about other ways to make the trip ie. car rental, bus.

Well, of course you can hie a car although I'm not sure whether hire companies would allow you to take it into Croatia, and you would certainly have to pay a premium if you did so.

www.viamichelin.com will give you route and estimated drive times.

Train is the obvious choice, imo. You can find train times, fares and details in English here:

http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passengers/abroad/croatia/opatija

I'm sure there are probably buses, but can't find the English info for them.

Thanks so much for your response. My problem is that I'm traveling with a group in Slovenia and won't get back to Ljubljana in time to make the afternoon train at 14:00 so I'm looking for other options.

I suspect your best option will still be the train (I really do think you may have problems with a hire car and going into Croatia), but with an overnight stay in Ljubljana. I can strongly recommend http://www.slamic.si/en/index.html

I can find no direct bus connection on http://www.ap-ljubljana.si/eng/ , the slovenian bus website.

About 4 years ago, I rented a car in Slovenia and had no problem taking it into Croatia. The rental agency said the insurance covered travel in Croatia, as well as in Italy and Austria.

Travel Tips for Ljubljana

Early Spring walk along the river ljubljanica

by songlines

Walking about along the river Ljubljanica is a real pleasure, sitting sipping coffee is also delightful and just watching the people passing by. Though it was still a little cold it was amazing how the sun's ray's would warm you.

Strolling through along the river side looking at the architecture and the different bridges is a delightful way to spend a morning. Cevljarski Most or Cobbler's Bridge as seen in the photo is standing on the site where in the 13th century an earlier bridge called Butcher's Bridge once stood, Cobbler's Bridge was designed by the architect Plecnik. Walking through the Old Town looking up at the different facades and buildings, and along the river sitting drinking coffee, and strolling among the stalls at the Market was real nice and gave me a good impression of what Ljubljana was about. My friend assured me that Ljubljana was a city full of cultural activities, we attended a concert, tickets were sold out but I managed to buy some from two different people. The place that night was buzzing and we had a great time listening to the music of Burhan Ocal and the Istanbul Oriental Ensemble at the Cankarjev Dom.

City of students

by Enzyme_X

Ljubljana and it's university is home to some 45.000 students. That makes Ljubljana, with total population of 270.000, a very young city. Street here are full of young people, heading to lectures or to meet friends at a cafe. And the real students life begins with the dark :-).

my favorite hairdresser in town

by anaiis

While travelling, your hair might need urgent haircut, but whom to trust? If you are staying at Park hotel or Celica hostle, you are just a few steps from Trubarjeva street, where you can find Stevo hair and beauty salon. Web site in Slovene only: http://www.stevo-sp.si/ Stevo is very warm and kind person. He is a perfectionist and knows very well what might suit you. Take his valuable advice. He is also a regular hair dresser in Slovene version of TV Makeover show. I trust him totally. He is not bossy at all and acts nice also towards his working coleagues or employees. The prices are quite affordable so don't worry about that. Stevo's wife Branka is make-up artist. I frequently meet foreigners that stay in Ljubljana in this salon. Embassy officials, clerks and even some famous persons. If you speak Slovene (or English!) you can have a few relaxing moments here while others take care of your beauty.

Ljubljana Tip

Walking down Eopova ulica, the pedestrian street (it s just as short as 300 meters), you can find some shops (somes maybe interesting for you). Suddenly the rose cathedral and Ljubljanica river will start the division: old versus new Ljubljana.
The triple bridge (at my back in the picture) is the connection between this worlds
