    Best hostel in town

    by

Youth hostel Celica is very special. It was a prison once (from 1883 to 1990). But artists made cells very special. Every room is different so you have to stay there for 20 days to see all of them.:))))

Unique Quality: The hostel is very near the train and bus station and it is almost in the centre of Ljubljana.

    SO NICE

    by

This hostel is hip, cool and very clean and accomodating. You must book ahead, or be there at 5pm to see if they have any free space. Every third friday of the month there is Argentinian ballroom dancing. Right behind the hostel is six of the cities coolest clubs, with diverse style. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and even though I stayed in a room with 13 other people, I slept very soundly!

Unique Quality: This hostel used to be a prison and there is a strong creative vibe through the entire place. The drinks are cheap and the rooms are very nice. There is a kitchen to use, and even a area where you can pray if you have the need.

Directions: Walk out of train station and turn left. Walk until you see Metelkova and turn right. It is on the Right, one block down.

  • Artistic Accommodations

    by

This Hostel is just cool. The building is unique, and the decorations are wild. Being a hostel, the rooms don't have much in the way of amenities. What they do have is tons of personality, and personality goes a long way.

The staff is also really helpfull. The young guy that I interacted with the most was truely excited about the hostel. He was happy to show me around and tell me everything that he could about the place, it's hitsory, and it's design.

Unique Quality: This hostel used to be a jail, and they don't try to hide the fact. What they did was have several artist help them remodel it. They went at their task with a gonzo enthusiam that I have never seen before. Each cell on the first floor was designed by a different artist or group of artists. Mine had a "Southwest American" feel to it.

Art is the key thing here. I have never been to a hostel that gives daily tours of it's rooms before (around 1300hrs or so). I've also never been to a hostel with it's own art gallery before. They also have an oriental tea room and a courtyard with iron sculptures along the walls. To top it all off, they left the barbed wire intact on top of the walls, just to remind you what used to be.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Aside from the tea room and the art gallery the also have a bar. Breakfast is included in the price and they have one computer for free internet access. The cells are really nice but I've heard that the beds in the dormatories are packed really close together.

Directions: A few blocks east of the train station, and a couple of blocks north of the Park Hotel.

    Good hostel open all year

    by

Celica is the only hostel in Ljubljana open all year. It is a very new hostel (opened mid 2003) and it is clear that a lot of money has gone into it; it is a beautifully renovated building (a former prison, now tourist attraction and art gallery). Prices start at 3300 SIT (14 euro) per night for a bed in a 14-bed dormitory (pictured). This price includes breakfast (or you can nominate to forgo breakfast for a 450 SIT/2 euro reduction in price). All rooms and bathrooms are mixed sex; no gender apartheid here! There are no single rooms, but 2-bedrooms are 4250 SIT/18 euro.

There are kitchen facilities and a small refrigerator, enabling you to keep costs down by preparing your own food. While laundry facilities aren't available at the time of writing, the staff tell me that they are just waiting on the coin-op (or should that be "note-op"? -- given the lack of coins used in Slovenian currency) mechanisms to arrive/be installed, real soon now. There is also Internet access, but only one computer, and expensive.

Check-in starts at 3 pm. Check-out before 11 am. Breakfast from 7.30 am to 11 am. There is no curfew; the hostel is open 24 hours.

Directions: From the train/bus station, walk about three blocks east, turn right on Metelkova ulica, and the hostel is half a block up the street, on the left.

spend the night in (former) jail

    by

Ljubljana has waited for all-year round hostel so long that now, when its finally arrived we feel its allmost too late! Anyway, there are 96 beds and 2 beds and toilet adjusted for disabled people. There is touristic information centre, dining facilities and a library. Its opened 24 hours a day. They organise also trips around Slovenia and you should be well informed about daily events, happenings and customs. You will be spoiled by cultural programme, lectures, etno music, discussion gropus, seminars and open door days.

Unique Quality: In the first floor former prisoner cells were renewed and chagned into unique double or triple bed rooms. Some of the rooms at the attic are adjusted for young families. There are also dorm rooms. You can prepare hot meal by yourself and there is also laundry room.

    More photos of the place:
    http://www.mladina.si/tednik/200319/clanek/celica/

I do believe that despite bitter history of this place it will become very popular since it looks smashingly cool and you might not find free bed here. There is another youth hostel - Youth hostel Ljubljana on Litijska cesta 57 in Ljuljana, and Youth hostel Ljubljana Siska which is based in Students home Siska (Dijaski dom Siska) and is available for tourists during summer vacations from June till August.

Directions: Near the central railway/bus station and near Metelkova culture center.

    ABOUT "CELICA" AGAIN.....

    by

"CELICA" is the composition of a modern youth hostel, expressive art gallery and historical museum.

It is a hostel in the former prison and lies just 300 meters from the bus-stop and the railway station in the center of Ljubljana.
And: it is situated in the very heart of the new cultural area among museums, galleries and the alternative cultural centre of Metelkova city.

"CELICA" provides quality information about the ongoing activities in the city of Ljubljana.

They organize guided tours around the city and scheduled tours all around the country.

Come and join the club and let's discover SLOVENIA.

Military Barracks in Metelkova were constructed in 1882 for the use of Austro-Hungarian military, in an area previously called COW VALLEY.

The area in question has been subject to different ,ilitary forces for over a century and the barracks have been demilitarized only after Slovenia's independance and the departure of the Federal Yugoslav Army.

    Transformation and renovation lasted for 10 years, from 1993 - 2003 !

Unique Quality: Next time I shall be in Ljubljana I shall go to this special HOSTEL !

    What more do they offer:

    cyber point
    bar
    oriental caf?
    slovenian taverna
    cultural program
    seminar rooms
    luggage room
    tourist info point
    24 hour service
    friendly staff ! great !

    NEW HOSTEL IN LJUBLJANA......

    by

THIS place is a former Art Galllery and a former PRISON!!
(There are more places like e.g. BASEL in Switzerland where they transform a prison into a HOSTEL, there they have 1 larger "cell" (1 made of 2) with a KINGSIZE BED ........good for a honeymoon perhaps??)

    But back to LJUBLJANA:

the rooms are artistically designed cells

    they have multibedded rooms

    rooms for disabled people

    apartment

    dormitory

    Additional offer:

    TV room

    guests kitchen

    the point of peace

    wheelchair friendly

    laundry

    safe deposit box.

The project was made possible by The City of Ljubljana and The Student Organization of The University of Ljubljana.

Unique Quality: Lowest price is 10 Euro.....and up......depending of course.

    NEVER EVER A PRISON AGAIN

The space of freedom with the inspiration of youth....

come and see, everything is a window for the eye to see......

    SEE NEXT TIP.....

    Directions: see your city plan....

    It's open!!! Ta-dammmm!

    by

Unique Quality: Till recently, Ljubljana must have been the last European (or global) capital without a proper youth hostel, and I had to blush many times disclosing this shameful fact to my brothers and sisters in budget. But as I almost abandoned all hope, it happened! Celica (The Cell) opened its door on 30 May. Located only some 300 m from the central station and situated within the complex of former military barracks, this aesthetically unique spot (adorned with paintings by several well-known alternative artists) will provide a bed and a shower for about 11 euro per night. All year round! Welcome!!!

Directions: Turn left after you've come out of the railway station building and walk down Masarykova Street for about 300 metres.

Anybody stayed in Hostel Celica?

by oja

Hi there. As I don't grown tired of chiming, my city has finally got a proper youth hostel. From what i've seen, I must say i'm impressed! However, what's the experience of those who really tested it? What's the atmosphere like? Are beds comfortable? Is there a curfew? Can the staff be called friendly?

Thanks for your input, i'd really like to know whether i should go on bragging or just hide in the corner next time somebody asks me about it! ;)))

I'll be in your city in September so maybe I'll give it a try and then let you know?

I'm staying at the student dorms Dijaski dom Tabor. Should I change my reservations? Which seems better to you?

Re: Re: Anybody stayed in Hostel Celica?

by oja

I think Tabor is OK, though Celica looks spectacular, really artsy and all. So far I've only seen it in the news on TV, but i'll soon go and check for myself. I think you'll be OK either way though.

Re: Re: Anybody stayed in Hostel Celica?

Do you have to be under 25 to be able to stay in a youth hostel? Jeremy

Re: Re: Anybody stayed in Hostel Celica?

by oja

Although I haven't found any relevant info on the Web, I really don't think so. I'll ring them and find out though, just to make sure.

Re: Re: Anybody stayed in Hostel Celica?

How can I find the link to booking reservations in hostels ? thanks.

Re: Anybody stayed in Hostel Celica?

by thomDK

Yup, I stayed there one night in the beginning of August and I must say that it's awesome!
The idea of making it in an old prison is quite original, I'd say but the interior is a bit more welcoming than i'd expect a prison to be :)

The atmosphere is very friendly. It's obvious that the crew is proud of the place and they should be! There are plenty of spaces to just hang out (even a place for prayer/silence, very sympathetic) + a kitchen where you can cook your own meals. There is a bar too, a good place to hang out and share travel tips with others.
And it's only 10 min. walk from either the railway station or the Triple Bridge. So it's very conveniently placed too.
There is no curfew. Well, they lock the door at midnight, but you can just ring the bell and they'll let you in.

I'll give it a high five and I'll most definitely come back to it. Been to Slovenia every year the last 3 years and who knows...I'll most likely come back to your little gem of a country next year!

Cheers from Copenhagen,
Thomas
