Eric Chilling Out in the Reception at Hotel Mons by antistar I'd been a little disappointed by Ljubljana's hotels, which tended to be expensive and not all that great compared to other cities in Europe, but the Hotel Mons changed that view: it is excellent. The staff are extremely friendly, and we made good friends of the drivers who shuttled us into town on the free bus. They were a great source of information, and were more than happy to wait around for us at 4am on NYE to pick us up after the clubs. If you stay there, say hello to Ales and the rest of the crew there. Although it looks like a motorway service station from the car park when you arrive, around the back it has some very nice architecture, and it is a style that permeates the whole building, from reception to your room. It's a very colourful, modern and minimalist style very typical of Europe, and one that makes you feel very relaxed. The rooms are spacious, and for the price I paid at around 50 euros, it was exceptional value, especially on NYE. The hotel has two places you can eat, a classy a la carte restaurant that doubles for the breakfast room, and a very cheap and filling self-service eatery downstairs. The breakfast, it has to be said, was excellent, and a real improvement over the M-hotel's stale bread and luminous orange juice. The place even had free internet. You just have to ask at reception for the leads and log-in details, and you can plug your laptop into their high speed internet connection.
The only downside was it's distance from town. It says 5km, but I swear it was much more than this. I certainly wouldn't want to walk it. When the taxi driver took us there from the station (and overcharged us the dick) he went out into the countryside before arriving at the hotel. I was so surprised I thought he was taking us out of the city to rob us or something (a bit of an overreaction in Slovenia admittedly). The hotel runs a regular free shuttle-bus into town, and if you call ahead they will come and pick you up or tell you where to get the shuttle-bus back to the hotel. It takes about 5-10 minutes to drive into the city center, and you do have to book ahead. It just takes some planning and you can enjoy a very nice hotel on the edge of the city.

One of the newest hotels in Ljubljana, located in the forest. It is a little difficult to reach without a car. Very modern architectural building. Lovely restaurant POLNA SKLEDA. (Full Bowl)
