Buses to and from Bled

by mrssharkey

Hi

I will be travelling from Trieste to Lake Bled and from Lake Bled to Salzburg. I believe the trains in Slovenia are quite slow.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to go by bus as I have trawled the net and found very little information.

I would be most grateful for your help.

Thanks

Elaine

Slovenian trains are not slow. Must be some old stereotype that you heard. Anyway, there are some nice modern express buses that zip you from Trieste ( bus station next door to train station in both cities ). You can hop on another to Lake Bled. Recommendation: hop on the not so fast but scenic bus to Lake Bohinj when you get to Bled. If you like Bled you will love Bohinj, and much cheaper and less crowded.

ciao !

Travel Tips for Bled

Rowing to Bled Island

by barryg23

Once the snow had cleared, we started our walk around the Lake. After a couple of miles we came across a place renting boats for the island. You can either row their yourself or take the more expensive option of being ferried there. It's much more fun making your own way there, though it did take a while to get used to the rowing.

A quick history of Bled

by blaird

I guess they have found stone age remains of humans here, but the Slavs really populated the area in the 7th, then the 9th centuries. Fastforwadr much later, past even when Charlemagne ruled this land, and the Bishop Albuin of Brixen was given the land by emperor Henrik II. Later follwed a transfer of admin duties, a revolt by the people, became part of Napolean's empire, then changed hands numerous times to commercial interests. During World War II, Bled was used to house the German military and civil headquarters, and in 1960 it acquired the status of a town. The sun rising and the island and castle becoming visible...beautiful.

Some historical facts

by MEdelmann

As I mentioned in the first tip, the population of this area goes back til the early stone age. In the 7th century slaves came here. In 1004 emperor Heinrich II. handled out this land to the bishops of Brixen (today South Tyrol - Alto Adige) and they owned it for nearly 800 years.

In 1803 Bled went to Austria and in 1856 it became a spa-resort. It was known under the german name "Veldes". After the second world war it grow rapidely.

Lake Bled

by croisbeauty

Lake Bled is rather small, it is about 2000 meters long, 1000 meters bride and its deepest part is 31 meters. The temperature of the water can get around 24 C degrees in the summer, which is very refreshing.
In the winter time, only if very cold, the water front freezes up becaming ice-shating paradise. However, stay close to the lakeshore because the ice is pretty fragile.

The Wishing Bell

by viddra

When you come to Bled and visit the island on the lake, don't miss to ring the bell and make a wish. It'll come true...at least mine did!

The bell's from 1534 and it's in the upper roof above the church nave. It was made by Patavina from Padova.
