Not bad... nor good

With the rooms spreading in a few bungalows down the hill (and the main building occupied by a group of noisy Polish) this is a small hotel at a walking (but steep) distance from the beach. The room was OK (far from the noise), breakfast was poor and served in strange conditions - half an hour before closing everything had been removed, and things came slowly and only by request, though with smiles and excuses.

The best thing was... free parking. The polish used a bus, and their large occupation freed space in the parking were we could move at ease.

The price was below average, and... we had what we paid for.

Old core.

by Maurizioago

Has Portoroz an old core or is that a modern town with lots of shops, hotels and restaurants?

Re: Old core.

No old core, a tipical holiday resort.

Right; pleasant enough, but very touristy, I'm afraid.

Piran, a couple of bus stops away, is a far more pleasant and historical place (though it can get extremely crowded at weekends/national holidays.....it's a popular seaside daytrip).

Thanks for your replies.

There aren't much info about Portoroz on VT unfortunately.

Ciao!

Because there's nothing to see in Portoroz. You'd better stay in Piran or Izola.

Don't be depressed though. Portoruz is ok, it's got a pleasant enough seaside 'promenade' type thing etc; it's just (as far as I could tell) a typical tourist-focused seaside place.

You could easily get the bus to Piran everyday if you wanted!

I booked a package holiday in a hotel in Portorose. I only hoped there was a nice old core there. I will go for sure to Piran.

Thanks again!

Definitely take a day to visit Piran. It is an interesting old Venetian port town that is only a few kilometers from Portoroz. Feel free to visit our Piran page for photos and tips.

Travel Tips for Portoroz

formaviva

by call_me_rhia

Formaviva is an interesting garden reacheable on foot from Portoroz and past Lucja. It's an open air museum housing several statues made by local artists as well as artists from abroad - all statues are carved into stone and most are abstract. The statues were collected over a 40 years period, from 1961 to 2001.
It's worth going there even if you're not interested in art, since the views over Portoroz bay are quite good.
To get there walk first to Lucja and then reach the go-kart circuit. On the left there's a campground: follow the road on the right that heads up the hill and continue walking.

Orlikins goes to Portoroz

"Port of Roses"

We went to Portoroz as a daytrip from Ljubljana, it was a _very_ close call between Portoroz and Zagreb...but we had a great time in Portoroz. Great weather, great scenery, great music in the stereo, great beer and an even better time!!

Portoroz is on the Adriatic, south of Koper & Piran. It's v accessible from Trieste, Italy. In fact we came across a lot of Italian/"Triestrian" daytrippers in Portoroz, so Trieste obviously isnt _that_ far away. Portoroz is like a stone's throw from the Croatian border and border crossing isnt a big problem.

Unfortunately our time was cut short as my last train back home to Austria was 4pm from Ljubjana! :( So we didnt have time to check out local restaurants & bars
