Dolencevi Tourist Farm: An excellent base for exploring

Dolencevi was the first tourist farm that we stayed at, and we used it as our base to explore the Postojna and Istrian coastal areas. It is well situated as it is only 10km from the Postojna caves, 30km from the Lipica Stud Farm (home of the Lipizzaner horse) and an hour from Ljubjlana on the highway.

When we visited, it was the height of the cherry season - the two cherry trees by the parking area in front of the farmhouse were laden with fruit when we arrived, and our kids were up those trees faster than a rat up a drainpipe! They continued to gorge themselves with cherries for the duration of our stay, and their clothes still bear the stains to prove it!

The farm is a pleasant place to stay, with hospitable owners: Boris, the farmer, is friendly and speaks reasonable English. His wife runs the kitchen and provides good, standard Slovenian fare using primarily home-grown, organic produce. The rooms are unspectacular, but clean and functional - my only real gripe was that, as usual in Slovenia, the bath towels are miniscule!

The surrounding area is pretty and ideally suited to strolling. It's very safe, and kids can pretty well run free through the little hamlet in which the farm is located.

My abiding memory of the place will be the garden ornament guarding the veggie patch - I have come across many a garden gnome in my time, but a scowling garden babushka was a first for me!
