Hotel Reina Cristina: A GRAND HOTEL.    Check Rates

  • When i first entered the Reina Cristina i thought wow it was like stepping back in time. The architecture is stunning, its over a 100 years old and is the oldest hotel on the coast, its well known throughout Spain.
Alot of famous people have stayed here including Sir Winston Churchill,King Alfonso XIII,Orsen Wells, Ava Gardena,Rock Hudson, the Real Madrid football team and me.
It has 188 bedrooms with bathroom and shower, balcony, telephone and safety deposit box.
We didn't think much of the bedrooms i think they all need updating they gave us another room the next day after complaining which was alot better.
The gardens and pool area are beautiful and lovely for relaxing, you can also see the rock of Gibralta from the grounds.

The staff is very friendly and helpful!
The amenities are a bit dated...oh, well!
Our biggest complaint was that we were cold and it was a HUGE effort to get more blankets as there was no thermostat in the room to adjust yourself!

A faded elegance that I found very charming...nothing if not memorable!

Hotel Reina Cristina: Colonial style comfort    Check Rates
  • Satisfaction:
  • Spent a couple of nights in March at this 100 years old hotel which has recently come under new management. The food was good, with full buffet style eating and plenty of choice. The bathroom was clean and the linen and towels were fine. Furniture was dated but this is in keeping with the style of the hotel. Excellent choice of hotel for exploring the area (Campo de Gibraltar) and even going over to Morocco on a short side trip as the fery terminal was within 20 mins walk. Hotel has 'entertainments' in the evening aimed at the 'all inclusive' guests who come on packages. A welcome diversion in the evening. Popular with regulars during winter months who enjoy the ambience and location.

The hotel dates back to the days before television when entertaiment was talking, dancing, playing bridge and generally mingling. Much of the original decor is still untouched and it has a lovely old colonial style. You can imagine officers from the garrison at Gibraltar coming over to stay at the Cristina before taking the steam train up to Ronda for the overnight 'excursion'. It is still an excellent base for all these trips. And it still enjoys a lovely garden with open air swimming pool.

Octavio: Convenient for Train & Ferry    Check Rates
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed at this hotel twice, either side of a trip to Morocco. On both occasions I arrived in Algeciras quite late and left fairly early, so I found its location, directly opposite the train station and less than ten minutes’ walk from the ferry port, extremely convenient. Despite the busy location, I did not experience much noise at the hotel

The reception staff spoke a little English, which was useful to me, however they seemed at first to be unaware of the reservation I’d made through Expedia when I gave them the details of my booking. I’d been unable to print the email I had received with the details but fortunately had saved a copy of it on my USB stick, so they were able to see this, which was sufficient proof for them to recognise my bookings. I also had to ask about the location of my room and the breakfast room and the times breakfast would be available as I was just given a key and no information was offered.

The hotel is smartly decorated throughout, with seating areas on each level and a spacious bar area and well laid out breakfast room on the mezzanine between the ground and first floor.

The first room I had was a large room at the front of the hotel on the ground floor and my second room, smaller but with a balcony overlooking the bus station, was located on the third floor at the rear of the building. They both had more or less identical layout and design with a well maintained and perfectly cleaned bathroom to the left of a narrow corridor, where an adjustable shower and bathtub were available along with a light up shaving / make-up mirror. An unusual feature of the bathroom was that the loo and a bidet were located in a separate section which could be closed off from the rest of the bathroom with a sliding door- perhaps useful if you are sharing the room with someone who likes to take a book in with them.

The room had two large fitted wardrobes, one long enough for full length dresses and the other with drawers in the lower part, and a large comfortable armchair at the end near the window opposite the small television. The beds were comfortable with nice cotton sheets and a jacquard woven cotton cover between the sheet and the bedspread. A writing table was available and a full length three way mirror was mounted on the wall in front of the bed.

The breakfast is presented as a buffet, with fruit, yoghurts, cold meats and cheese available, alongside various breads and pastries with a good selection of jams and even a savoury tomato spread. A toasting machine which rolled the guests’ bread slices through and dropped them inconveniently underneath it provided the entertainment and good coffee was made by a machine which ground the beans freshly for each cup whilst another machine dispensed watery fruit juice. Tea and hot chocolate were also available.
