Just because its Spain...
by jgemini65
Just because its Spain don't assume it is warm at the beach! I asked the desk person how to get to the nearest beach...he told me about the closest one to the hotel but said I would need to take a cab! Not only was the distance misleading...but it was freezing!
We have only been through or past it.

"Our Contact with Algeciras"
We did not visit Algeciras on this trip to Andalucia, but used it as the port of embarcation and return on a 2 day tour to Tangier from Torremolinos. We had previously bypassed the city some 20 years earlier when driving from Ronda to our lodging some 10 km further toward Tarifa on the Malaga Highway.
"We did not go back"
At that time we proceeded to Tarifa and went to the shore to look out at the strait, before going on to Sevilla.(Someday we may find and reproduce pictures and details from that trip).
"Gibraltar"
We will never get around to visiting Gibraltar. The only views we have were dim ones because of the overcast from the previous days of stormy weather. On our return trip things were only slightly better. (See our Transportation Tip here)
Mosquito palace

Stayed in Algerciras for a five days, at the Guadecorte Park Hotel. Do not leave your door opening to the deck/porch open at night in June, no matter how good the weather is.. I was exhuasted the first night; the outside temperature was great, so I left the door opened. I had mosquito bite welts the size of golf balls all over my arms and back in the morning. Everyone had told me Algeciras was dirty, but I enjoyed it.. It is a very industrial city (steel plant and oil refinery, plus the port), but the views of Gibraltor, Africa, and the bay are wonderful. I would recommend driving up the Atlantic coast from Algeciras for about 45minutes-1hour, to see the sunflower fields, Osbourne bull signs, cork trees, and the cute coastal towns (Tarifa with the wind surfers, and Bolonia's little beach and Roman ruins).
The port is huge, but most things you'll need are right there. You go into a large room with 4-5 different companies selling tickets for the ferries (the fast ferry was canceled the evening I planned on going to Tangier because they claimed "weather is bad"), so just pick one and then head to the main entrance and take the escaltor upstairs.
Do not count on leaving on-time on the ferry to Morocco. We boarded a ferry that was supposed to leave at 7pm, but they changed the sign to 7:30 right after we bought the tickets, and the boat didn't head out until 8:55pm! I thought this may have been the exception, but on the way back (Tangier to Algeciras) the boat was almost two hours late again!!
