Train to Granada?
by leics
I'm pondering a visit to Almeria in the spring (a budget carrier has opened a new route from my local airport).
I know there are trains to Granada. I have two questions:
1. Will I need to buy tickets in advance or can I assume that the Almeria> Granada trains will be pretty uncrowded (I don't mind standing all the way).
2. Is a daytrip to Granada feasible, or would I be better to plan for a few days based there?
Also, it's possible I'll be visiting over Easter. Should I expect restaurants etc to be closed for the holidays at any point, and what effect will Easter (Good Friday/Easter Sunday etc)have on transport, if any?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Thanks in advance........

Oooh I am jealous leics... I don't think the trains from Almeria to Granada should be too crowded but hopefully someone local will say: it may depend on what day you go, trains normally run according to the Sunday timetable on public holidays, which include Good Friday, 10 April (but not I think Easter Monday, except in Catalonia). It's about 2 hours by train from Almeria so should be just about feasible to do a day trip, but if you can stay in Granada - hotels get booked up well in advance for Easter - it's well worth it for the Easter processions, I remember these as going on well into the night. Curiously I don't remember restaurants in Granada being closed at all over Easter, possibly they stay open because they get so many visitors at that time. Can't say for Almeria, though.
Buen viaje!

I'm glad you're jealous....in the nicest possible way. :-) This is entirely new ground for me.
I could go the week before Easter, no probs (or the week afterwards), but was wondering if it would be feasible to stay a couple of nights in Granada. I need to be absolutely certain about the Easter transport options, because of getting back to Almeria for the flight home.
I especially want to know about transport on Good Friday, as the plan would probably be Sunday > Friday.
If it's at all iffy, I'll just base myself in Granada another time (there are budget flights to there too).

Ans 1: if you know precisely when you wish to travel and on which train then it is relatively easy or possible to get your ticket using Renfe online booking. I would personally do this not earlier than 2 weeks in advance for this route. The train is a Media Distancia one and quite comfortable.
Ans 2: A day trip is feasible if trains are running well. (Its possible to take a bus also) but perhaps there is more to do in Granada during Holy Week but make sure you do the Alhambra ticket in advance because it will be busy and entry is facilitated using the SERVICAIXA system which am sure has been covered elsewhere. Doing a day trip will not allow any viewing of the evening processions.

To clarify, I have no special desire to see any processions nor do I have any special interest in the religious aspects of Easter in Spain.
I just want to check that, should I decide to travel on Good Friday/Easter Sunday, things will be at least fairly near normal. Being from the UK, I'm used to no/hardly any public transport on festival days/public holidays (even ordinary Sundays).
The info about pre-booking the Alhambra is useful. Thank you.

Thank you ever so much.....that's exactly what I needed to know before I make a decision. Much obliged. :-)

House of the Vicecounts of Castillo Almansa
by Miguel_Marques
Built between 1773 and 1780 in a baroque-neoclassic transitional style under academicist patterns. Rich facade.
It houses the history archives of the province since 1931, a library and a collection of archaeological pieces depending from the Almeria museum.
Rodalquilar
by Lisalu
Rodalquilar is a little left town in the inner part of the country. It looks like an old wild-west city. The former inhabitants where working in gold mines till in the 50-ties and the ground is now contaminated with chemicals.
