Visiting Almeria this Christmas

by starseeker

I'm driving down to Almeria province (I live in Southern France) on December 24th. I just want to spend a delicious 8 days somewhere (maybe in more than one place) just relaxing, writing songs and taking in the scenery. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding hotels (or any other accomodation), particular places to visit or where one could meet up with interesting people and do stimulating things?

I can recommend two places: Aloe vera is an eco-resort in the middle of the dessert. The owner, Lola, is a beautiful person who left a hectic life in Barcelona to run this remote'ish country house. The name is Agroturismo Aloe Vera. agroturismo_aloe_vera@hotmail.com

Closer to the beach is another eco-resort called La Joya, pricier than Lola's, but a bit more exotic and you pay for the location too. I don't have its details here but you can google both places, see pictures etc.

Almeria is very good place for relaxing and taking in the breathtaking scenery (deserts, orchards, more deserts and the blue Mediterranean as a background).

I loved Mojacar village. Now: THAT is a view! However I didn't manage to find any accommodation in Mojacar village. Maybe you will be luckier!

Another area would be Almerimar, west of Almeria, I had stayed there several times and I prefer to other areas closer to Almeria as Roquetas del Mar or Aguadulce .

In Almerimar you can stay with Bancotel (50 euros per night the double room) at Melia Golf Almerimar(****), but if looking for a cheaper options there is an aparthotel Sol Almerimar at beach front and the harbour for (but you get this offer at a spanish web site that has not other language options www.rumbo.es for similar price)

Some areas that deserve a visit would be of course Cabo de Gata national park (I would suggest to get the excursion on jeep of the guides there as San Jose, they will after give you tips about palces to visit inside the park and will give you a overview of areas not so accesible for outsiders..)

the last time I took a trip from Cabo de gata, San Jose to Mojacar, all the coast line .. really enjoyable, stop at Cuevas de almanzora to see the caves.

another day trip to Tabernas to see the areas where all the spagutty westerns were made, also a castle on the top of the mountian outside the city in ruins (beware of the road was not god in my last visit!!!) and the minihollywood theme park. Next to it is the biggest solar energy center, just to look from the distance....

and of course you can always scape for a day excursion to the Almeria alpujarras ...

Hope this helps

A fantastic place ... the Alpujarras in Sierra Nevada and near the sea... if you prefer small and typical villages.

Travel Tips for Almería

Roquetas de Mar

by benidormone

This is the fastest growing city in Almeria province. The population is now around 60.000 people and is expected to rise to 170.000 in 2010. The beaches are very nice but the sea can be a bit rough and alot of times there is too much wind. Its ok for a short beach holiday break.

Almeria the not so crowded costa!!

"The costa Almeria"

The Costa Almeria is not so crowded as the other costas, I must say I didn't really like it. There are no big attractions. Infact I found it a bit boring. Altough the weather was very nice and the hotel accomodation was excellent. But maybe you'll like it. It might be interesting to visit Almeria in the year 2005 because the city will host the XV Mediterranean Games. They will start on 24 June 2005 and will finish on 3 July.
