Does anyone know if there are any Travel lodge/motel
chain type places to stay for the odd night at reasonable cost in Spain? (for August)
Near Alicante, Murcia or Almeria if possible.

I went to almeria once and they have a good youth hostel there, very close to the beach and not expensive..
i forgot the link, but it's easy to find in the net.. :)

I landed at Alicante airport and stayed in an IBIS hotel .5 mins away from airport .£34 per room per night,very clean and a good nights sleep was had by all.

This is the neuralgic center of town. Named after the old moorish gate that lead to the town of Purchena. Nowadays surrounded by 19th century buildings built during the boom of grape and minery. One example is the House of Butterflies (Casa de las Mariposas) by Almerian architect Trinidad Cuartara and Casa Durán by architect Rull.
This is a great example of the so called iron architecture from late XIX century, when new materials as iron and glass were applied to civil engineering. This loading pier was designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel and built in 1901. It´s conformed by a stone bridge and a wooden and iron pier used by the trains to transport iron ore into the ships. The pier will be restored to host a photography museum, restaurants and shops.
Two years after my first visit to this wonderful hideaway, I went back to Almería, again to the National Park of Cape of Gata.
The best possible accomodation is a small rural house where to feel like at home & enjoy the surroundings.
This time I remembered to get the book by the spanish writer Goytisolo Campos de Níjar. It´s one fo these times when reading makes a big part of the pleasure of travelling because this brave & caring book helps you understand not only the landscape but the way of living around.
