Travel Tips for Almería

Alcazaba: cañones (3 recinto)

by Carmela71

The Tercer Recinto at the north-west end of the Alcazaba is a fortress which was added by the Catholic Monarchs. Its thick stone walls and sturdy round towers are in much better condition than the rest of the Alcazaba.

La Chanca quarter

by Miguel_Marques

Probably the most picturesque and typical area in Almeria, together with La Joya.

This quarter is as ancient as the city, being the most improtant area in the Moorish town.

Nowadays, most inhabitants are fishermen (nearby is Pescadería, another populous quarter), many of them of gypsy ethnicity.

The quarter is more African than European. Little colourful houses stack up the mountain, always deluged by the sunlight, resembling a cubist painting.

One thousand times painted and photographed, famous Spanish novelist Juan Goytisolo wrote a striking short novel about life in these streets.

One piece of advice: visit in the mornings and try to look as less tourist as you can.

2nd excursion: Desierto de Tabernas, Sierra Filamb

by Carmela71

We took the road from Almeria to Tabernas ( N-370 natioanl road), some parts are moorway but not all of them, first of all we founded the Mini holliwood, but this is not really the place where most of the films were made, it is a little far around 7 kms from there.

then we arrive to Tabernas, were we had a great breakfast in a caffe in the city center...

We went up to the mountain to the castle adn we nearly have an accident, but thats other history..

NEVER GO TO THE CASTLE BY CAR!!!!!!!! Go walking LOL... too dangerous, even for a jeep.

We took the road to the solar station, we went up (A-349 road), driving all the mountains and enjoying the scenary: Senes, Tahal, until Macael, where the famous marble is born .... Then we took the (A-334 road) until the main road to get the Almanzora caves, and finally in the (N.340) we got into Sorbas, where we visited the caves... and back to Almeria ...

"Mini-Hollywood"

The desert near the village of Tabernas was the scene of many Spaghetti westerns.

Other local film productions include Lawrence of Arabia, Anthony & Cleopatra, Doctor Zhivago, Treasure Island, Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

Some of the movies that were shot here are legendary: Sergio Leone's 'Dollars' trilogy ('A Fistful of Dollars', 'For a Few Dollars More' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly') starring Clint Eastwood as the Man with No Name, 'Django' with Franco Nero...

Almería was also used as a location for other film genres after the sixties (Patton, The Wind and the Lion, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade...) but it was the spaghetti-western that really defined the relationship between the province and the film industry.

See the saloon, jail, bank, sheriff's office and watch a cowboy show at midday.

Mini-Hollywood is the longest established of three theme parks existing in the area.

The other two, Western Leone and Texas Hollywood, are still working locations.

"Desierto de tabernas"

The desert of Tabernas lies to the north of the town of Almería between the mountains of los Filabres and Alhamilla, and occupies some 11,625 hectares.

This paraje natural is considered to be the only true desert in the whole of the European continent.
