Vera Hotel: A lovely hotel near Almeria

Vera Hotel is approximately an hour away from Almeria airport in a the town called Garrucha. Its a beautiful little hotel on the highway. The rooms are huge by european standards and have been tastefully maintained. There is a personal touch to everything in this hotel, which I particularly liked. And the best part is the tariff, it is extremely economical! Ask for the account manager - Maria. She is one hell of a lady. She helped me find a salon, a taxi and a place to buy shoes in this tiny little village in the middle of nowhere! She speaks flawless english and most certainly deserves to be a concierge at one of the bigger hotels.

The hotel has a bar and a restaurant and the food is wonderful - and I say this being a vegetarian - its quite something. Normally, it will be very difficult for me to find something decent to eat in Spain other than a salad as Spain is essentially a meat/fish eating nation. However, I had a four course vegetarian meal here and it was absolutely scrumptious! The presentation was equally wonderful and the food was so delicious that even though I had my tummy full, I kept on eating. My meal consisted of a cold tomato soup - which I exchanged for a salad, grilled andalucian vegetables - zuchhinis, aubergines, tomatoes, scrambled eggs with zuchinis and a bowl of fresh fruits. Each course was rightly flavoured and presented very very well. Strongly recommend this hotel!

Hostal Delfín Verde: John Lennon's refuge

John Lennon stayed here for some weeks when shooting in Almeria "How I won the war" in 1967, before he moved to a big estate house in the outskirts of the city, the Finca Santa Isabel. It is here where he started composing "Strawberry fields forever", watching the sunsets over the Bay of Almeria.
There is a picture taken by Douglas Kirkland of Lennon playing Spanish guitar in one of the rooms. "El Manzanilla" is the bar next to the hostel where they used to hang out, now it´s in ruins.
El Delfín Verde is a favourite spot on the beach and the hostel is unexpensive and enjoys great views of the sea.

Albergue de San José: Best bet

A totally chilled, very friendly youth hostel, with a front patio featuring a "Chiringuito"-style bar, which serves excellent (mainly vegetarian), meals all summer (from about 8pm), and there is also an inside patio for eating your own food.
There is a communal fridge, to store your beer, water etc.
You sleep in "literas" (=bunk beds) in a room with 4, 6 or 8 people, and you get a 60x60cm "taquilla" (=locker) for your valuables. There are just TWO doble rooms available, so book early if you want to be just the two of you...

Chilled social atmosphere, great for exchanging travel tips, economic (9€/night incl. sheets), located in the nature reserve of Cabo de Gata-Nijar, the hostel is close to busy family beaches as well as long streches of deserted beaches, the lovely pottery-village of Nijar, -horse riding, snorchelling, diving, sailing, canoeing, walking, walking, walking... ALL this and more is within easy reach if you base yourself at the hostel!
