by Indalecio
"INTRO"
Almeria (actually written as Almería--with accented "i") is on the southeastern coast of Spain, east of Granada. It was regained for the Spanish Throne by the Catholic Monarchs - Ferdinand and Isabella in 1488, four years before the defeat of the Moors in the Muslim city of Granada, put an end to the period known in Spain as "The"Reconquest". The same year Columbus reached the New World.
The origin of the city is the Alcazaba (Muslim Fortress) built by Abhderaman III around 955.
The Cathedral dates from 1524.
