August fiesta and feria in Almunecar is a week long party. There are a variety of events ending in an extremely spectacular firework display at the end of the week (15th Aug). The fireworks are really something else. We have seen many firework displays in Spain, but this has been the best yet.
It's all done in typically chilled-out style. You never really see anyone organising this event, and yet the display involves the beach, the rock (which turns into a volcano), the castle and the boats and fishermen.
On the night of the 15th, the Virgen is taken from the little church and paraded through the streets to the beach (see my other tip for more detail), where she is put on a boat and sailed around the rock. When she arrives at the other side, the explosions begin!
After the display, the whole town parties on at the feria ground on the edge of town until the early hours where there are fair ground rides, food stalls, live performances and casitas owned by local bars, retaurants and organisations. Many of the children and some ladies dress up in feria dresses. There is something for all ages. It's simple, very loud and fun!
