Travel Tips for Baeza
Jabalquinto Palace Garden
by elucas
This peaceful garden was within the palace - a lovely place to relax.
Andrew, as you will see in one of the pictures, is advertising VT !
The Jabalquinto Palace - or Fortress - has been beautifully renovated and is now home to the New University of Andalucia.
Palacio de Jabalquinto
by Aitana
The Palace of Jabalquinto is the most important sample of civil architecture in Baeza. It was built in Plateresque style in the XV century, under the order of Juan Alfonso Benavides, favorite and relative of the Catholic Monarch Fernando.
The decoration of the façade is very rich. In the upper part there are eight tilted coats of arms arranged in the Flemish way. Four belonged to the wife’s lineage, four to the husband’s. There are also diamond points and nails. Two big cylindrical buttresses open forming mocárabes (honeycomb work).
As it was closed we couldn’t enter to see the courtyard and the Baroque stair.
Closed on weekend!
Baeza - Changing times
by elucas
Andrew and I liked this scene - we were walking down from the Cathedral square towards the Plaza of Santa Cruz. In the square, between the venerable Church of Santa Cruz and the towering Jabalquinto Palace, some brightly clad children had gathered. Somewhere in the crowd - I don't think you can make it out in the picture, so you will just have to trust me - we saw a little girl wave shyly to her friends. She was on the way to her "Primera Communion"- she was so dainty and ladylike in her full length white dress gathered in at the waist with a broad white sash. It is, however, Baeza's new gleaming white tourist train which takes centre stage, as it pauses in the square to let visitors admire the ancient buildings.
Saint Francis ruins - San Francisco
by spanishguy
The Convent of Saint Francis was constructed in the 16th century. Its most important element is the funeral chapel of the Benavides family. At the beginning of the 19th century a earthquake ruined the dome of the great chapel, remaining just the stone altarpiece with subjects of the Adoration of the Kings and the Shepherds, attributed to Esteban Jamete.
by Aitana
The gate of Ubeda was a part of the city walls. In 1477 Isabel I, the Catholic Monarch, ordered its demolition to avoid confrontations among the noble families. Nevertheless, one of the three original arches and a tower have been preserved.
