Where can I buy fresh herbs?

by Carmelle

My local fruiteria always has parsley and mint. Im looking for fresh basil, thyme, rosemary, tal tal...does anyone know where I can find them in Cadiz. Also, is it possible to buy chilli peppers anywhere?

One last question - is the market thats just off Plaza Flores closed just now?

Thanks in advance....Carmelle in Cai

don't know if this answer is too late but fresh chili peppers are hard to find. I usually have to go to Hipercor to find them. Though I have heard of a fruteria along the Avenue which as them. Which type of Chili's are/were you looking for? Did you find a place that sells them, I'd be interested to know too.

Travel Tips for Cadiz

Que Bonito es mi Cadiz

by blint

I love walking around the old narrow streets in Cadiz's historical centre. As I live in the new town by the beach it's great to go to the centre and enjoy the different atmosphere there and have a drink on a street terrace.

The photo was taken outside a little bar/restaurant near to the market. Although it didn't look like the cleanest place to eat it was a great place to stop and have a beer and watch the world go by.

At Chiclana

by kinma

We used to go on weekends to a little house in the "La Barrosa" beach, at Chiclana, south of Cadiz.
It was a wild beach where you could walk for hours without finding anyone.
Now thousands of cottages and hotels have been built around...

Getting a Word in Edgeways...

by blint

Here in Cadiz the people love to talk, loudly. In fact they think the French and British whisper when they talk, just to show you how loud they can be!

They don't mind that the table beside them in a bar or restaurant, or the rest of the people in the bus or train can hear every word they're saying.

Getting a word in edgeways may prove difficult as well as 'turn taking' in conversations in not taken seriously. If two people start to talk at the same time, one will not give in, instead both end up talking at the same time! The rest of the people have to choose who they prefer to listen to.

When I first came here I would stop talking if someone started to say something at the same time or if some one interrupted me. This way I never got to express myself so these days I do what they do and keep on talking or I politely say that I started talking first and that I'd like to finish! All my friends are aware of my finding this cultural trait difficult to get used to and therefore let me finish!! :)

If you watch debate programmes on the TV it is impossible as everyone is talking at the same time even if the poor presenter tries to ask someone to wait their turn!!!

They do not see their form of discourse impolite and are surprised when I say this is not the done thing in Britain! One friend suggests their way of talking is more dynamic!

Whatever your views on this topic, if you are here you have to swallow your values and talk!

Conil de la Frontera

by Carmela71

I had visited a few times, in the last two occasions I enjoyed VT meetings with our famous SirRichard who is from Cadiz and visits the area very often. I had enjoyed his hospitality and is a pleasure to keep on meeting you ;-) ....

Conil has incredible beaches and I had used both times as home base on my excursions around; Zahara de los Atunes, Barbate, Medina Sidonia, Arcos de la Frontera, Vejer de la Frontera, Chiclana etc

Sunsets

by SirRichard

Having most of the beaches west-oriented, in Cadiz you can enjoy some marvellous sunsets, from all over the coastline.

My favourites are in La Caleta Beach, with the little boats, the rocks and the castle in the background.
