Hotel Fuerte and Costa Conil at Playa Fontanilla
by ermanangan about Fuerte and Costa Conil
I stay two nights at hotels Costa Conil and Hotel Fuerte both located on the Playa Fontanillal; conveniently steps away from the beach and at around 100 euros for a double, it's hard to criticise. But, there are some very distinct things to remember. Since Conil is a small village, there is no bus or shuttle from these hotels into the main town (15-2- minute uneventful walk). Secondly, they are extremely resort-ish, esp Hotel Fuerte which attracts families with kids and teens and has all of the resort trappings like lounge-lizard nightly entertainment and waiters that hit on single women. The room that I stayed in reeked of cigarettes and the entire hall reeked of a strong men's cologne (Hotel Fuerte). Also, be warned that as of this writing Conil is under a lot of development along the beaches--there is a hotel being built between these two which means noise and rooms with construction views. Also, set up in a traditional style with a large patio or common areas (half of the lobby is the banquet dining room at costa conil) if they happen to book a large event or have entertainment (a bad singer with a synthesizer and a large wedding at Costa Conil) you WILL hear the noisey festivities. At Costa Conil all of the rooms face the inner plaza so getting a quiet room (if there is something going on) is impossible. The rooms are hardly soundproofed and such things can last close to midnight. Ask questions and be careful when you book; I was fooled by the good prices. There are many hostals (a bit more rough) within town that are close to (more public) beaches but if you're looking to escape and relax it may be a better option. great views of the sea but watch the ongoing construction in this area; two minutes from the beach; two restaurants located right on the beach(known in some guides as the "two best restaurants in conil", but mind what you order-- stay away from mayonnaise, cold soups and shellfish. I was brave enough to try these things and I got food poisoning!

Conil de la Frontera
by shugoey
"Old Town"
This is a typical Andalucian town with narrow cobbled streets, tapas bars and pavement cafes around the main plazas. Conil is well known for its seafood restaurants. Conil is an unspoiled, nice town and not very crowded, at least if you visit off season. I have never visited during July and August so I can't say what it is like then.
There are some historical monuments worth visiting, Tower of Guzman el Bueno, Church of Santa Catalina, Convento de la Victoria, Convento de San Francesco de Paula.
"Beaches"
The beaches of Conil: La Fontinilla near the town Paseo Maritimo. Fuente del Gallo backed by cliffs to the north of the town. Calas de Roche numerous coves to the north, difficult access to some, make them quiet except for summer weekends.
The beaches are busy in July and August. Be aware of the wind, sometimes it feel like you are getting sandblasted.

playa fontanilla, conil.
Conil de la Frontera is a former fishing village which has become a popular, low-rise resort.
It has good beaches and the streets still have a village feel to them.
"Sunday excurion"
Suzanne and me took the car to travel along the coast, we wen to Azahara de los atunes, then throught the coast to Barbate, went to Vejer de la frontera, then to Los cañños de la meca, torre de trfalgar and back to conil to eat on other wonderull restuarnat
This is Zahara de los atunes, km of beaches like this...................
Zahara de los atunes
From this fishing village and others along the Costa de la Luz, tuna are fished with the traditional almadrabas.
It is a small, attractive, authentic place, in constant danger of becoming fashionable for its great beach and lack of high-rise development.
This is Barbate.
There is no mass tourism, no buildings over three stories high and hardly any foreigners apart from a few hippies.
As well as being a likeable working tunny-fishing port, it is a convenient base for reaching local beaches and other natural attractions.
Vejer
Trafalgar Bay at 14kms. from Vejer with the Trafalgar lighthouse.
This is of course the scene of the famous battle.

Has anybody studied Spanish in Conil?
by Richardbey
I plan to do a few weeks at a language school in Conil de la Frontera to improve my Spanish over the summer and I cant decide which of the village's two language schools to choose (Academia Andaluza vs Academia Atlantika). They are similar prices/locations and I was wondering if anybody out there has got any experience / advice / recommendations that can help me?

I put four w's so it should be: www.tgcomes.es
You can hire a car if you want to travel around more otherwise go by bus. If you've got the money then a car would be nice to go to the more off the beaten path places and to get where you want, when you want.
check out where you can go by bus on the Comes website.

Best bet is to take the bus from Prado de San Sebastian bus station. The bus company "COMES" goes to Conil. (In fact they comes and goes)
Have a look at this:
http://www.tgcomes.es/horarios_17_english.htm
Takes about 2 hours.
If you arive at the airport in Seville, you can take the airport bus that goes all the way to this same SAN SEBASTIAN area. This URL opens a map centred on the bus station:

You can catch a flamenco show somewhere on your visit.
Not sure about the bulls though. best to ask locally once you arrive. Seville is out during your times. So locally is best bet. The bull ring at El Puerto de Santa Maria is very splendid but maybe too difficult to get to.
