VT Review Summary

Cordoba Centro is a 4 star hotel located on Jesus y Maria Street, on a pedestrian mall, central to many shopping streets in Cordoba. Attractions in the vicinity include San Nicolas de Villa, Archaeological Museum of Cordoba, and Calleja de las Flores. Cordoba Centro received an 86% satisfaction rating. Positive reviewer comments included spacious rooms and public areas, which were clean, comfortable and conveniently located. One guest mentioned there is a coffee shop at the entrance to the hotel that served a “splendid” morning coffee. There were few negative comments: some felt the rooms were overpriced for being three stars, plus many felt it was difficult to locate and hard to find parking. Amenities include air conditioning, room service, television, and minibar.

Medina Azahara by taxi

by Savl1

I'll stay very short time in Cordoba (1 day),but I want to see Medina Azahara. What will be the price to go to Medina by taxi from the center of Cordoba ? And what will be the price for two ways if I'll ask taxi-driver to wait for 40 min. and return back ?

5 Euro seems a very good price considering that Medina AZahara is about 10 kilometers outside the city. West on highway 431, then you take a smaller side road.

Medina Azahara site is about 15 to 20 minutes drive from the centre of Cordoba. Maybe around 9 kms. I always reckon on a fare of around One Euro per Km. So that's about Euros 18 plus waiting time, say another 20. But you may negotiate with the driver. Maybe he can do it for less. But never taxied to Medina Azahara.

There is a bus organised by the tourist people that leaves at 11.00am and should get you back by say about 1.30 latest. Its a good way to go and fare is not bad. You can book your seat using the Tourism office web site http://english.turismodecordoba.org there are two stops. One near the river and the Mezquita / Roman Bridge. The other is on the Paseo de la Victoria near the Roman Mausoleum. So if you are visiting the Mezquita early you can take the bus at 11.00am or visit the Mezquita on return.
When I visited the Mezquita last month, I entered at the time the main gate opens which is 08.30 and was able to wander around (with a number of other tourists and locals) for a good 45 minutes before being asked to leave. Not quite sure why this was done but thinking about it subsequently I believe that the entry at 08.30 is when the staff mainly appear and that the entire Mezquita area is not just the Cathedral obviously. So it is the intention of the church to allow visit to the building but is really intended for access to the Cathedral and not to gawp at all the wonderful richness of the pre cathedral parts surrounding the central cathedral area. The official payment opening time of the mezquita / cathedral is 10.00 am until 6pm during the months of Nov to Feb, and from 08.30 to 10.30 and then 14.00 to 18.00 on Sundays and some other holidays. Staff at the ticket kiosks do not get going until nearer opening time and the early morning visit was free ! The notice on the ticket kiosk specifically states:
From Monday to Saturday 08.30 to 10.00 entry to the cathedral is free, but only for independent visitors and in strict silence. during this period Group Visits are not permitted.

the cathedral is having restoration work done and so currently there is a separate area for services directly behind the main part of the cathedral.

visit the Mezquita - the 2nd largest mosque in the world (I think).... and one of Spain's most talked-about Moorish wonder. I stood in awe and tried to absorb everything - from the mighty walls of the Mezquita... and its delicate arches (please see photo below) , its pillars to the dazzling church inside the mosque.

Yeah, there is indeed a church in here too (built by one of the Christian kings during the Crusades... ya know, just to prove a political point...??)! No words could describe the beauty of the Mezquita... although I felt it's being spoilt by the presence of the church built inside....

LA MEZQUITA
Its style is a mixture of Byzantine, Roman, Gothic,Persian and Syrian Syrian elements.
Caliph Abderraman built the huge hall. This hall consists of columns.A second row of arcs exists above.
Caliph Abderraman II added 8 more arcs. Its columns were of white marble of Mirida
Alhakem II built in 961 the minaret and Caliph Alamanzor double the size of the Mosque and added columns of blue and red marble.

Bullfighting

by hojasdehierba

I must begin by saying that I dont like bullfighting at all. But as a fact, it is present in Cordoba everyday life, at least you see it in most bars. Most of all, you will find pictures of Manolete, a torero from Cordoba who was killed by a bull in 1947. He was a star in his age and his death was a kind of national drama in a poor, hungry Spain of the worst years of Franco dictatorship. So deep was the impression caused by his death that there exists presently a very common proverb with his name: “a ver si soy yo el toro que mato a Manolete”, which is used when one thinks that is being blamed unfairly. The picture was taken in a bar and I have added a Manolete photo so that you could recognise him.

Medina Azahara

by Carmela71

Just 8 km of Cordoba around 100 years ago, was discovered the city of Medina Azahara, one of the largest city of that times. Still is on restoration, and still lots to discover under the hill.

After 75 years it was destroyed by the Bereberes, many works were stolen and taken to Cordoba palaces,

Not sure if you can go by public transport, but if you have your own car, it deserves 100% a visit.

Miss this restaurant

by NedHopkins about Almudaina

Based on reviews by other travelers and in guidebooks, I reserved a table at Alumdaina several weeks before we left for Spain.

Though the servivce was fine, my wife and I were gravely disappointed by the food. The mushrooms in my appetizer -- mushrooms in shrimp saunce -- tasted as if they had come from a can (or jar). Worse yet, my oxtail entree was almost certainly prepared in a pressure cooker. I'd go to McDonald's -- they're all over Andalucia -- before I'd go back to Almudaina.
