FIELDS OF PLASTIC
by AsturArcadia
Over the past decade or so, vast areas of countryside in southern coastal Spain have disappeared under plastic. In places the natural landscape has been drastically reworked, with great ledges being carved out of hillsides to accommodate huge greenhouses.
Much of the vegetable and fruit produce is, of course, sent to cities, not only in Spain, but also right across Europe.
Environmentally friendly? Just think of the transport costs and fuel/energy consumed in moving all this produce to areas where it would naturally be regarded as out-of-season.
And consider the ways in which local hydrography, drainage and soil structure are being altered by having so much land under cover.

"My Hosts"
My company for my two day visit were Carmen (Carmela71) and Sandra (both of whom you can see on my Malaga page) along with Teresa and Emilia who both work and stay in Almerimar. Thanks ladies for showing me the sights and nightlife, and Emilia's special recommendations of the food to choose from the menu's.
