Discover the 'old world' of Cadiz bay
"The Bay"
Cadiz bay is one of the natural harbours of the world, much in use by sailing ships. In fact from these waters, the great discoveries of America were initiated. Magellan and Columbus knew this bay. In more recent years, it has seen the export of the most popular drink in west Andalusia : SHERRY ! you can visit the famous bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera or El Puerto de Santa Maria or take a trip to Cadiz on the regular ferry.
The river Guadalete meets the Bay at El Puerto de Santa Maria. Columbus's boat gave it's name to the town. It was from this town that adventurers salied to explore the riches of the Americas and to transport the sherries to Britain and elsewhere.
Nowadays it is a fully working town with many idustries and a very popular place to visit for many Spaniards who want to cool off in summer.
It's also a good place from which to tour the lovely provinces of Cadiz and Sevilla.
