Casa Sol y Luna: Our favourite accommodations spot!
In our search for accommodations in Spain during the Christmas period, we stumbled across this very nicely landscaped B&B in early November 2008, initially booking the nights of Dec. 24 and 25th. As our plans changed due to flight cancellations from England brought on by the world financial crisis, we were able to book at third night a few weeks later without any problems. Casa Sol y Luna is located outside Estepona and is quite difficult to find without detailed instructions, which the owners forwarded to us!
This is a beautifully built and maintained Spanish house, located on a hillside with a beautiful view of the countryside below leading toward the Mediterranean Sea. The main feature of this B&B is its very picturesque outdoor pool as well as the immaculately maintained grounds of various flowers, shrubs and trees of all sorts.
Of the three bedrooms in the house, one 1st floor room is used by the owners with, in our case, the second available for Sue's sister. Sue and I had the only ground floor bedroom, with access to both the living/dining room and the outdoor swimming pool. The off-season room rate was 45 Euros per room/night in cash plus an additional 5 Euros for breakfast if you wish.

Casa Sol y Luna: We felt almost at home!
We enjoyed our ground level room - it was really quiet without nearby neighbours and, if we felt like it, we could walk out our patio doors and fall right into their swimming pool! The bed itself was very comfortable but, being a hot-blooded guy, I found the double duvet a bit warm for my tastes - still I survived somehow.
Our room had a small adjoining room with a modern shower, toilet and sink arrangement that worked just fine. Another door opened into the living room where they had a fireplace and we also watched a CD movie on their TV on Christmas Eve. The breakfast table and refrigerator are located at the far end of the living room with a small bar providing access to food being prepared in the adjoining kitchen.
We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere so much, that we made just lazing around the pool our major activity on one of our few off-days from travelling - this was just too good to pass up.
Our young hosts from Belgium and The Netherlands were very helpful, providing us with small cakes in pottery bowls as a gift on on one of our evenings there. They also were very helpful in the weeks leading up to the trip as I emailed them with various questions on road conditions at that time of year. Iris and Hadelin were having a glitch with their banking accounts when I booked the rooms but, after brief email correspondence, they just said forget about sending an advance and simply pay when we arrive.

Keeping it local: Stayin with locals
Staying with the locals is realy fun and can be very educating too. You learn a bit about the way they live and it cost you a lot less than staying in a registered place. Also they will tell you where the locals shop and where the best stuff and meals can be found.

Private accommodation: Renting a room
We rented rooms from Pedro, but we had private bathroom facilites, a lounge and a kitchen to our disposal. We never used the kitchen due to the fact that when we go on holiday we just don't cook. We go to restaurants and explore the food of the county we are visiting

Hostal La Malaguena: Cheap option in Estepona
We stayed one night in October 2006. The price was 36 EUR for twin room (although we made a reservation for a double room) with bathroom. It was our stop on the way from Malaga to Gibraltar. The room was quite small and not very modern. The same for the bathroom. I would not recommend it for longer stay. We also had some problems with communication with the staff as they did not speak English very well. The location of the hostal was quite nice, near the main streets and a nice square with some restaurants and cafes. If you come by car be prepared for some parking problems as the streets are narrow and free places are hard to find.

Bahia Doncella: Rent an apartment
I found an apartment on the internet, if you search theres heaps on there.
The place i found was in an apartment block called 'bahia doncella' - its about 3km from the town centre and you WILL need a car if you stayed here as theres nothing near by apart from 2 restaurants 5 min walk away.
that said, it is a fantastic apartment block, 100m from the beach, although the beach isnt nice at all. it has a shared swimming pool but the facilities in the apartment are great. 2 bedrooms and everything one could need inside, it was just 175 euros in november (includes 30% discount for booking a few days before)

Hostal El Pilar: Charming Hostal in the old town centre
Have just spent three days in Estepona staying at the Hostal El Pilar. It is a traditional family run hostal right in the middle of the delightful Plaza de Los Flores in the old town. Perfect for a few days for visiting the area. Basic, reasonably priced, no breakfast or dining room, but cafes are in abundance all around.
Highly recommended for a short stay.
Old tiles, traditional.

Estepona Golf Apartments: Central Estepona Apartments
I stayed in one of these apartments one New Year and it felt like a home from home it was so clean.
If you don't want the hassle of a hire car you can walk everywhere in the town centre within 30 minutes.
The apartments have toaster/kettle/coffee machine/washing machine and the block is situated in a quiet residential area. The larger apartments have two bathrooms.
They don't have sea views but there is an indoor pool and gym (seasonal ?).
The larger apartments have open plan dining area for five or six and some on the North side have small balconies to catch the evening sun. All weather tennis courts are close nearby.
Take a streetmap with you as the local tourist office frequently runs out of stock.
Note: Laundry is changed weekly unless you ask in advance.
Comfortable beds and I didn't hear any motorbikes screaming down the road at night.
Very good location for beach and halfway between Estepona Port and the main shopping streets.
Excellent TripAdvisor rated restaurants within walking range. Good pedestrian shopping streets and pedestrian squares within walking range.
