Drive from Granada to Madrid
by carcassone
The last leg of our March vacation is to get back to Madrid from Granada (no open jaw).
My current plan is to pickup a rental car from Seville and drive to Granada, touring the white hills town with an overnight in Ronda. We will not use the car during our 2 days in Granada. We'll drive from Granada to Madrid on the last day and probably spend our last night in a hotel close by the airport.
Is the drive from Granada to Madrid interesting? Rick Steves' said it's a boring 4-5 hrs drive. Is there any worthly stop along the way? We'd have done Toledo already as a daytrip from Mad the week before.
I'm thinking if it's there is not much explore along this route, then perhaps we can ditch the car 2 days earlier in Granada and just bus/train/fly to Madrid on that last day.
We are a family of 4 so I need to price out the options too.

I would say ther is not much to explore. Cordoba is interesting but not on the way.
Bus to Madrid from Granada will take you 5 hours and around 13€ per person so it is a cheaper option.I´d choose this option.

If you drive don't miss the small town of Consuegra. Depending on the road that you are on, it is very close to the freeway or a few minute drive from the direct route to Madrid. We stopped at Consuegra from the road to Toledo. Consuegra is a small, historic, town that has eleven white-walled windmills. You can tour the 16th century windmills or even visit the 10th century ramparts where the Moors and Christians battled.
While your visit to Consuegra and the famous windmills, you can imagine the notorious knight, Don Quixote, standing with you and overlooking the plains of La Mancha. Many travel ads feature the picture of the windmills. I have a few photos on my Consuegra page that you might be interested in.

Travel Tips for Granada
Mediterranean and Sierra Nevada
by Maggies
One of the best thing in Granada, except for great culture and monument, is that it's so close to the mountains and to the sea.
So, there amazing views around the city and excellent conditions for practicing both summer and winter sports.
Obtaining your Credentials in Cordoba
by into-thin-air
"Credentials are reported to be available in Cordoba, again, only on weekdays and again from the office of the Cathedral. (I had a friend join us in Cordoba and made enquiries on his behalf about obtain his credentials, Unfortunately as it was a Saturday we were unable to obtain any but I was assured that they would have been available form the office of the Cathedral on any weekday) To find the office, stand with your back to the main entranace to the cathedral courtyard, turn left, and first left, you are now heading for the old Roman Puente across the river, the tourist office is to your right and the office of the Cathedral is in the next building towards the river.
Costa Tropical, Salobreña
by Beach_dog
Where the province of Granada meets the Meditterannean sea, called the Costa Tropical. Its jewel is the historic town of Salobreña. Good clean beaches stretch along the coast here, and Salobreña town with it's whitewashed houses offers plenty of history for the curious. Only 45 minutes drive from the city of Granada.
after the sunset
by amapola66 about Plaza de San Nicolas
After watching the sun set over the Alahmbra, you can visit one of the litle bars or restaurants at the nearby Plaza St Nicolas. Great views in abundance and a variety of places around the square to eat and/or drink.
We found most of these rather overpriced and not as friendly as other areas in the Albaicin, but you are on holiday, so I guess it's a good spot for the odd night, but I would recommend just a drink and eat elsewhere. Strangely, we didn't receive our free tapas here either !
The bars in this part of town close quite early for Spain (around midnight), the buses run up there if you don't fancy the walk.

We arrived in Granada via the airport. But a caution - the airport is located well away from the city center. There is a bus service to the center of town. We waited at the airport for a taxi for over an hour. I think we should have taken the bus into the center of town, then gotten a taxi from there.
There is an extensive bus service through the town. From the Plaza Neuve, take Bus 32 for a cheap (135 pesetas) tour around the historic areas.
