The tourist office, I recommend a trip here, get a city map and check availability of the Alhambra tickets. Located in a theatre (very near the cathedral) where apparently shows are put on some nights.

I'll be in Granada in August and want to go by bus for the day to Cordoba for a quick look at the Mezquita. I gather the first bus leaves Granada at 7.30am and takes around 3 hrs. Does anyone think it's feasible to do this? It will probably be my only chance to visit Cordoba.
yes it's fine.
The bus times are on www.alsa.es
The bus station in Granada is a little further away than the train station. It is on Carretera de Jaen. Local bus 3 goes to it and passes Gran Via near cathedral etc.
In Cordoba the bus station is very near the train station.
You can walk down to the Mezquita and older part in about 30 minutes. Nice walk through the city or through the park on Avenida Victoria.
By the way there are two trains each day from Granada to Cordoba and reverse but maybe the times are unsuitable. For times look at http://www.renfe.es/horarios/english/index.html
The location of the bus station in Granada is at these coordinates which you could cut and paste into Google Maps and then get a better idea of your area.
37°11'58"N 3°36'49"W
Similarly the bus station in Cordoba is at these coordinates:
37°53'22"N 4°47'25"W
If you look at the satellite map you can quite easily see the Mezquita and the Roman Bridge. It is certainly a wonderful building.
Thanks for these very useful and detailed replies.

The spice market is really just big two stalls at the side of the cathedral. Here you can buy any Arabic or South/Central American spice you can think off as well as teas and herbs.
Saffron (Azarfran) is usually very expensive in Spain. Here you can get a large bag of ground saffron for a couple of euros or the real thing for cheaper than anywhere else.
Just to walk past and take in all the smells is an amazing treat too, though I recommend buying something to help spice up your cooking!
Nice start to the walk with an easy walk out of Granada over fairly flat
ground as far as Los Olivares but with quite a sting in the tail of the day
as you then have 300m to gain in the last 2k.
Walking on a mixture of quiet roads and earthen tracks.
Plenty of opportunities for Coffee and lunch stops in the small towns and
village's en-route and good a choice of accommodation in Moclin and one good
bar in the square for your evening meal
At the end of our trip to Spain, we wanted a hotel close to the Granada airport. The resort we stayed at contacted the tourist board and the recommended the Hotel Corona in Santa Fe, which is located about 15 miles from Granada and only about 3 miles from the airport. I wish I had a picture of this town - it is well worth going to. It is an old wall and gated town - with all four gates still present. Go there after sun down and just watch people. But warning - this is Spanish town - not a tourist town - so know a bit of Spanish.
If you go - try the 1492 Restaurant. It is on the east end of town - a nice walk from the center.
The Hotel Corona is located near the center of town - just a few minutes walk from the center. The church and the town square are also worth seeing.
But mostly just spend time walking the narrow city streets and watch the people.
We have recently `discovered` budget airlines and our flights to Granada cost the ridiculously small sum of 1p each plus airport taxes, we flew with Ryanair from London Stanstead airport [which actually isnt in London] Ryanair also fly to Granada from Liverpool check the website www.ryanair.com for latest offers and schedules
with Ryanair`s silly low prices you do sacrifice comfortable seats and inflight meals [no loss there] and there is an undignified scramble for the extra legroom seats [you are not allocated seat numbers its first on the plane gets the choice of seats] but its only a 2 hours 15 minutes flight from the UK
Granadas airport is small but comfortable, there is a cafeteria / bar and all the usual facilities, you can catch the bus from here into the city centre [about 12k / 20 minutes away]

Q: Parking for city, not the Alhambra "I will soon be spending a couple of weeks south of Granada. In addition to a visit to the Alhambra, which I know has its own..."
A: "OK - but bear in mind I do not drive, but I am suggesting this could be less of a (fraught) journey to your idea. Find your way to the car parks at Paseo del Violon..."
