Birthday celebration ideas in Granada
by Birgie
Hi,
How would you plan a birthday in the city of Granada for a young person? We will be in Granada this summer during my daughter's 8th birthday and I want to try to make it a special day. I thought I would take her to the Alhambra that day but I would like to go to a special restaurant and a festive place to spend the evening - appropriate for kids of course!
Thanks!
Birgit

Another idea for a place to visit would be the gypsy museum in Sacromonte, there are great views back over the city and towards the alhambra. It is a very relaxing and open place to spend an afternoon. There are not normally that many people there. They have one or two old Gypsy style toys to play around with. We take our sons there, and they have a great time playing. Also there is a small outside bar. Oh and there is also the museum which replicates the old Gypsy caves as they were.
Just an idea and reading your post you haven't left yet so not too late!
Travel Tips for Granada
Salamanquesas
by blint
These little fellas are such wonderful creatures; they live in Granada and all over the south of Spain too. They are a very common sight all year round but especially in the summer months. There are two types of lizard type creatures that you may see, but this type is by far the cutest. Look at his little hands; he has little suction pads on them! These Geckos also have oscillating eyes too!
Don’t try and catch them because they are fast little critters and if you pull their tails they will fall off as a defence mechanism!
This photo was taken in my bathroom when I discovered I had a new house guest. This morning I have been looking for him, but I think he might have exited via the toilet! Oh, well maybe he'll reappear later!
Las Cruces
by Christina1881
In the beginning of may (3rd of may 2005) was "las cruces" - a time for celebrating in Granada. On many plazas local groups make like an exposicion with a cross. (It is a day celebrating the cross - more or less!)
Women and children wear the tradicional gypsy-flamenco-dresses, and there is a admosphere of partying throughout the city-center.
"Las Cruces" is celebrated every year on the 3rd of may - which is a partially day off in the province.
Sinde the Spanish government has prohibided "botellones" (drinking in the street) a couple of years ago the celebration of Las Cruces has been changing and it is still trying to find it's way back to the heart of the local people.
Plaza Isabel de Catolica

Columbus financed his voyage to the new world by winning the graces of his queen in Granada - this event is immortalized in stone by the sculpture of Columbus unfurling his contract in front of Queen Isabella.
According to the contract, Columbus would keep a portion of the riches he brought back from the spice colonies and also earn the title of governor of the new world. In return, he promised Isabella that he would spread Christianity in her name in all the places his voyage would take him.
Unfortunately, neither party got what they wanted.

Going to Alhambra: Take the Red Minibus
by Mozumbus
Alhambra is a 10 minutes drive from the city center, i.e. from Isabella Catolica, through cute red mini-bus # 32. One can also walk through but the way to Alhambra is quite steep up the hill and it is better to save energy which will be required very much for Alhambra visit.
The mini-bus carries Alhambra written in bold fonts on the top of the wind screen, so be careful and don’t jump onto any red minibus you find!
One ride costs 1.2 Euros but buying a carnet is recommended to save some good pennies.
Questions and Answers
Q: Parking for city, not the Alhambra "I will soon be spending a couple of weeks south of Granada. In addition to a visit to the Alhambra, which I know has its own..."
A: "OK - but bear in mind I do not drive, but I am suggesting this could be less of a (fraught) journey to your idea.
Find your way to the car parks at Paseo del Violon..."
