Welcome to the Big Brother House Granada - Ab Fab!

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on February 16, 2010

Stayed a saturday night in February at the wonderful Portago suites. Housed in an old building on a narrow side street, very centrally located for sightseeing in Granada, this aparthotel is decorated in a very contemporary style. It really does look exactly as it appears in the website. In fact when we arrived, we said it looked even better! But the decor is so contemporary that it reminded us somewhat of being in "The Big Brother House" (UK version), so when we were in the hotel, we spent our time speaking in Geordie accents, providing a running commentary on our movements, ablusions, bodily functions etc etc.

The suites are a 2 minute walk from excellent shopping, plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from within easy walking distance and the little local bus to the Alhambra stops almost outside the hotel.

On arrival, friendly receptionists greet you (desk covered 24 hours a day). Excellent English put our poor Spanish to shame. Very friendly and helpful. A lift to our 2 bedded suite on second floor - room 201. both bedrooms had twin beds pushed together, one room overlooking quiet central courtyard, second bedroom with french doors opening onto the street.

Lovely spacious well equipped sitting room with french doors over street also. Big flat screen tv. Kitchen was well kitted out but all we used was the fridge. there is a mini-bar. Bathroom really nicely done with excellent shower and bidet and heated towel rack.

The decor is WOW. it's really modern and because the hotel was open only 3 months when we visited, it was still immaculate. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the furnishings and sheets were all of a very high quality. It exceeded our expectations.

Excellent double glazing kept the noise out completely during the day. so much so that we commented on how wonderful it was. Unfortunately, the only negative would be that from the front bedroom at night we heard a lot of noise from people leaving a bar nearby. All conversations seemed to carry up to us but the beds were very comfortable and made up for that.

The internal courtyard garden carries on the Big Brother theme with a fake grass path and big ice-like stools dotted around. A sliding door off the courtyard leads to the "diary room" sorry i mean the breakfast room... mad decor there. white and red predominates. The Nespresso machine for breakfast - usually such a luxury at home in dublin - produced blander coffee than we were used to at this stage in our trip to Granada but my efforts at both choosing from the many different types of coffee capsules and then actually using this completely simple machine were a cause of great amusement to my mates. Breakfast not a high point. there was the nespresso coffee machine, a few apples and oranges, some not great miniature breakfast pastries, a bit of rubber cheese, can't vouch for the cold meats or toast and some yoghurts. to be honest, i would give the breakfast an average. the room is windowless and the whacky decor doesn't really make up for it.

The foyer of the hotel is an internal courtyard atrium with a glass roof. it's kitted with bubble chairs and some philipe starke ghost chairs and their black equivalent. the bar is a room probably about 15 ft x 15 ft if that and not really a bar at all. it's stocked and has a bar and a few high stools but i couldn't imagine using it.

there were some families staying there when we were, they seemed to be going skiing during the day and i would say it would be a good option for families as the suites have the separate bedrooms, the sitting room space and the kitchenette. plenty of room for families to spread out plus i noticed a nice looking high chair in the dining room. The public areas would appeal to kids who wanted to try out the unusual furniture but they would not induce you to lounge around there for the day.

i would definitely stay there again. i would be interested to see how it looks after a year of wear and tear but it was great fun for a weekend trip to Granada.
