Good For Solo
Granada on a budget
If you're looking for a cheap hostel in Granada to base yourself in while you visit the Alhambra or explore the city and you don't mind the simple life, look no further. If you need pampering and fluffy pillows, you won't like it.
Bocanegra is basic but clean. The showers are small and the toilets even smaller - if you're a hefty North American you will feel cramped - but there's plenty of hot water. The 'dorms' (twin bunk rooms) are fine - some have small balconies so you can avoid your fruity socks after all that walking. There's a small kitchen - not going to win awards but enough to cook in - and a communal room downstairs with a pool table, an internet PC (there's also OK free wifi) and seating.
It's a short walk to the centre from here - and at this price you can afford to stay an extra night or two if you want to see all the sights - the sunsets and the views of the city are worth it (you just won't see them from the hostel itself).
The staff are friendly if you make the effort - just be aware that reception is not really open before 2pm as the manager has another job. Welcome to Spain in 'el crisis'.
In short - a crash pad at rock bottom prices, close enough to where you want to be. And the staff are friendly with a good sense of humour - try out your Spanish and remember - you get what you pay for!
PS - I guess you could also base yourself here if you needed a few days to sort out longer-term accommodation for a study/exchange trip or work in Granada.
Unique Quality: Friendly staff
Clean, even if it's basic
Close to the city centre
Directions: Residential area close to city centre
Basic commodities at this youth hostel
This hostel offers the basics anybody needs: bed, bath, and a bit of food. You can request a room with a private bathroom, which are tiny but clean. However, if sharing isn't a problem for you, the common bathrooms are actually very clean and decent. There's also a common kitchen where you can eat at any time you want. The bedrooms are also clean, except for some of the linens, which have some pretty questionable hair stuck on them. It's a better idea to bring your own, but if you don't want to carry them around, well, just try to sleep and not think about the bed too much. Bringing your own towel is a must, though. There aren't any here. Overall, it's an OK hostel, and it's very affordable, which is its main quality.
Unique Quality: Good prices, basically. And good location. It's a 10 minute walk away from La Alhambra and from the town center.
