Leaving our luggage

by berylmcmillan

Friends and I are going to be in Granada for 1 day, arriving midday and leaving about 5pm. We want to visit Alhambra but will have our suitcases. Does anyone know where we can safely leave them for the afternoon please? Does alhambra have luggage lockers at their entrance, or the railway station maybe? Thanks

While the train station in Granada is relatively small, according to the following website there are lockers for luggage. (http://www.luggageguides.com/articles/1717/luggage-locker-for-large-backpacks.html) I don't know how accurage this website is as I have never used it before). Please note you are going to be pressed for time. I would get a taxi to take you straight to the entrance at the Alhambra and, as Pedro mentioned, you need to reserve tickets. The system randonly assigns access times to the Nazrid Palace, so you may have to try several times to get the entrance time, say 2:30. From the entrance to the Nazrid Palace it is about a 15 minute walk, but there is lots to see along the way. Karl

Travel Tips for Granada

Book a tour

by paulapes

The Alhambra! If you are near Granada, you've got to at least see the Alhambra...it's wonderful. This is one instance where I would book a tour....you get much more out of a tour of a monument like this by having a guide tell you about it. Our tour took in the Alhambra, catedral area, and the Albaicin. Everything we saw is our best memory!! See my travelogues.

THE PALACE OF CARLOS V

by BerniShand

did you enjoy the cup of hot chocolate ? wasnt the sun lovely and warm as we sat on the wall ? the cats that wander around here certainly like to have a fuss made of them

how differenet the Palace of Carlos V is to the Nasrit Palace ! it looks so stark inside after the Moorish splendour thats its almost a shock to see it
the square shape of the building doesnt prepare you for the massive circular courtyard within, just look at how that doorway was constructed - its design makes you more aware that you are standing in a circle in a square, come upstairs to the upper level, you can see what a feat of engineering and design this is, all the lines and curves of the stonework are so sharp and clear

but its a soulless place, it feels clinical, unused, unlived in, unloved
actually I dont think it was ever loved, it was commissioned in 1526 but never finished, it wasnt till the 20th century that it was roofed and finished

every year the Granada International Music and Dance festival is held here, in its favour the accoustics are very good, but to me it just looks like an inside-out bullring

the really good thing about this palace is the museum, there is no charge for entry, the information is in Spanish and English, and the displays are well lit and really interesting, especially the one about the restoration of the Lion Fountain, when it is complete people will be able to walk right up to it again, and touch it, a little bit of me is glad thats not allowed now, it will be really difficult to get a good picture of it when its surrounded by people
there are some lovely pieces in the museum, its a shame we arent allowed to take photographs

Pedal past La Alhambra

by raquelitalarga

Of course cycling is huge all over Spain but Granada has hills and mountains!
There are popular routes all over this area, even the Alhambra hill!
Go up past the famous monument, you'll get to the city cemetery (where Republicans were shot during the Civil War) carry on higher and paths snake all over the mountainside. Red squirrels leap from pine tree to tree ( exciting for an English person who usually only gets to see American grey interlopers!)

Again, not really off the beaten path, but wandering around the Albayzin area should be done with leisure and time and a supply of water. It's usually pretty quiet and HOT. There are wonderful stone decorations in the floors and walkways, and the entrances to the homes are magnificent. Don't do it at night, and always be careful of pickpockets. Take lots of photos!

I have to say that the best way of experiencing Granada is on foot. There's no better way to see the small alleyways and narrow streets and really experience the smells, the sounds and the colours of this city! And, the best part is that almost everything you'd want to see is within walking distance! Go explore!
