Huelva

by blint

Huelva is one of the least visited Provinces by foreign visititors , in the very West of Andalucia next to Portugal. It has a high population of Moroccans due to Strawberry picking. Work that many Spaniards perhaps don't want to do therefore it attracts people in need work, albeit low paid.

The main tourism it attracts is for it's beautiful countryside and the beach town of Lepe.

Lepe is the butt of many jokes in Spain. I don't know why exactly but the equivalent of Blonde jokes are attributed to the inhabitants of Lepe. It is a small town of only 23.607 but has 24 km of beach (Islantilla, La Antilla and Nueva Umbría).

The provincial Capital of the same name, Hueva, is not the prettiest of towns though it has plenty of history dating back to the tartessos.

Aracena is perhaps the nicest town in the province. It is small, but pretty but there are things to do, such as visit the caves (Gruta de las Maravillas) and lakes. In the caves you can see wonderfully coloured stalagmites and stalactites. It would be the best place to base yourself to explore the nature around it in the Sierra de Aracena. Sierra means mountain range. You can visit the PICOS DE AROCHE (peaks of Aroche) too.

The Minas de Riotinto (Mines of the red river) is something 'interesting' to see as you feel like you are on another planet. The water around the mines are blood red and the earth has variations of that colour. To be honest it looked like the land had been raped and pillaged, but above all it really did look out of this world.
