Fair at the Feria !
by alucas
At the Feria del Caballos there is also a big fun-fair, with numerous rides and stalls. This is obviously a major attraction for the kids during the day, and the teenagers in the evening. It amused us to see the children queuing for the roller-coaster, the girls dressed up in their finest flamenco dresses.
The fair is held on land just to the east of the main Feria site, on the other side of the railway (which is on a viaduct here).
Surprise!
by unaS about La Alternativa
Vegetarian restaurant are usually difficult to find outside of the big cities. One can always eat well of course with salads, potatoes and so on but finding a Vegetarian restaurant in this small town was a real surprise!
Good vegetarian tapas!
Meat and fish dishes also served.
Both indoor and outdoor seating. They serve both Spanish and other Western foods.
Gonzalez Byass tour - not good
by ELear
I thought this was a rip-off, especially the so-called “tapas” at the end, but it might be better in summer. (This was December. There were only three of us.) The man who showed us round hardly seemed to try to hide his lack of interest, or that he was reciting exactly what he’d recited and showing what he'd shown (thing with mouse, signatures - giving each group time to discover some famous names) over and over again to other groups before. There’s a huge pavilion at the end, with lines of hundreds and hundreds of tables waiting for people who've paid for (over-priced) sherry and “tapas”, then a souvenir shop as big as a supermarket.
Tio Pepes Cellars
by smschley
It’s inconceivable to visit Jerez without doing some Sherry tasting, and the most popular Cellar is Tio Pepe’s. Everywhere you look you either see the logo or their sign. The tour is pretty pedestrian and more expensive than I would have thought but at least it included a tasting.
In 1835, young Manuel Maria Gonzalez Angel reached Jerez prepared to forge his way in the prosperous and thriving sherry business. Encouraged by the continuous development of exports, that year he acquired a small cellar and begun to prepare and export his own wine. Shortly after, due to the growing success of his company, Manuel Maria Gonzalez decided to form a partnership with Mr Robert Blake Byass, his agent in England, which gave rise to the Gonzalez Byass company
Jerez - some characterful corners
by elucas
Look up at the top of the monument in Plaza Ascuncion in the centre of Jerez and you will see this graceful statue of the Virgin Mary.
Other pictures show the handsome facade of the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Merced which is also near the centre of the town, flowers tumbling off a balcony, another church with an illustration of the Madonna surrounded by flying angels, and a winding street with Arab windows.
