Shops in Jerez
by alucas
Jerez has a good selection of shops for a town of this size. The main shopping streets are Larga and Lanceria in the centre, and these are pedestrianised. There are a good selection of boutiques in both streets, as well as shops of all kinds.
Tapa Centros at the Fiestas de Otono
by alucas
During the autumn festival in September, the bars in Jerez participate in a competition called Tapa Centro. Over 50 bars take part, and a booklet is published giving the list of bars, their locations and their specialities. There is a voting form in the booklet for which bar you think has the best tapas. The booklet is available from the tourist office, or any of the participating bars.
A very tasty way to supplement your bar crawl !
Give the chef a medal !
by alucas about Restaurant Gaitan
This restaurant is tucked away down a small street off Porvera, and you really need to look at a map before trying to find it. It is well-known and prestiguous, and the owner has won numerous awards, both nationally and internationally. The walls have numerous photos of the owner with (presumably) famous Spanish celebrities, and of him receiving awards.
The tourist menu is quite reasonably priced at 16 euros (drinks extra), but doesn't do justice to the restaurants reputation - so be prepared to pay more (we will next time !) and sample some of the specialities from Jerez and Andalucia.
Gonzalez Byass Bodega (the Gardens)
by Martin_S.
What better place to begin a tour that will end with wine tasting (Sherry in this case) than in the gardens that surround the production facility. The tour guide loads you and your group onto a small train comrised of the locomotive and three cars. Then you procedd from the entrance garden through several larger gardens, all within the confines of the production facility located in the center of the city of Jerez de la Frontera.
You also pass by a small growing area for regional grapes, but we were informed that these grapes were NOT used in the wine making.
Gonzales Byass Bodega, the barrels
by Martin_S.
Here at the Gonzales Byass Bodega they have a custom of having barrels autographed by visiting personalities. Some, are of the Gonzales family, owners of the facility. Others are dedicated to the Spanish royal family, like this one of Juan Carlos I and autographed by him, or at least what is written on the barrel is an accurate copy of his autograph. Others that we found were Stephen Spielberg, Orsen Welles, Winston Churchill and many others. The last photo shows how the barrels are labeled. A pity we did not have more free time to wander in this area to find more who's who barrels.
