Travel Tips for Jimena de la Frontera

Castella de la Frontera

by bugalugs

In the early 1970's many villagers had moved from the old town (on the hill) to a new town 7 km away, with all modern conveniences they had not had on the hill. Apparently the old town then became a sort of 'hippy' town.

To reach this village from San Roque take the C111 a road that is narrow, winding, with drops and seems to go upwards forever. I certainly didnt like the drive up here.
There are lovely views though and this is the Guadarrangue Reservoir.

Jimena de la Frontera

Jimena de La Frontera is a small town of just over 9000 habitants in the area known as Campo de Gibraltar, it is inside The Alcornocales Park which is the last Mediteranean Forest. It was the Moors who gave the name to the town of Xemina, which later became Jimena. In the 16th century it was the base for nearly 300 bandoleros. The title of town was given to Jimena in 1879 by King Alfonso XII. The most interesting monument of Jimena is its Castle which dates back to 7th century.
