Malaga, Spain

by litaplaza

We will be visiting Malaga in May just for a day. How accessible is the city from the port? Can we explore the town on our own? If not what sort of transportation should we get? From the port, do they have the hop on hop off buses that you can take for the day? Interesting places to see and do in Malaga?

Port is steps away from this lovely city. plenty to see and do. There is a double deck tour.

The Alcazabar - or fort - is well worth seeing. I think it is free or a small charge if you show your passport. It is not expensive even if you don't!

It is quite a steep climb in places but you get to walk around the old walls and in and out of th evarious rooms and buildings.

It is right next to a Roman site too - not sure if that is always open to the public.
Nice Tapas bar near the entrance too!

August is also a good month to visit Malaga, cause the feria is there. Hundreds of 'Casetas' - original buildings constructed specially for this week welcome the visitors inviting them to drink and eat wine, Spanish Ham and of course, the typical Malagueñan fried fish -'Pescaito Frito'. Also the best bullfighters come to Malga during this week.

Totalán

by Pauldelabar

Totalán is a small villiage in the mountains above Velez. It is small enough to 'not exist' as a place on VT.

I have created my Totalán page as a travelogue to Malaga with a link from my homepage and here.

Puerto Banus, Marbella. In the port area, there are several disco-bars. La Comedia and Dreamers are cool. For excellent dining try the Restaurant La Meridiana, it's a bit removed from the actual port area, but is arguably the best eating in town.
Used to be a popular jet-set locale. Still very upscale (lots of boutiques). Beautiful white yachts and nice cars. Euro-snobs galore. Summer is a lot of fun, winter is rather dead. Clean - casual is alright for walking around, but not necessarily for the discos.

The International airport has regular flights to most major cities and is located just 10 minutes from Malaga City centre, and is within 30 minutes by car from most other popular resorts on the coast.
You really need to hire a car to fully appreciate the splendour and plethora of photo opportunities that this part of Spain offers.

There are plenty of beach front cafés in Torremolinos(called Chiringuitos) selling fried fish, snacks and refreshments, which is just as well as the walk back from the main beach into the town centre is uphill all the way.
Restaurants cater for just about every taste, should you not feel like trying typical Andalusian food. There are bars in abundance proclaiming their heritage to one nationality of another; Irish, English, Dutch, German you name it Torremolinos is likely to have it.
