Travel Tips for Mijas
Why walk, When you can Ride?
by Geoff_Wright
Hire one of these handsome looking carriages and be driven around the town in style. Horse and carriages work the summer months and can be found in Plaza de Pina. I think they are quite expensive, but we did see people patronising them.
Mijas Fair
by keeweechic
Mijas has a yearly fair which is held in early September. The event is held to celebrate the Patron Saint of Mijas – the ‘Virgin of the Rock’. There is lots of traditional dress by the locals and even the horses are dressed in their finery. In the main square, Plaza Virgen de la Pena, there is lots of food and drink on offer.
Burros
by keeweechic
One of the first things you will see when you come into Mijas are Donkeys. They are tethered up in their colourful regalia waiting to be put to work. Much is written about the treatment of these Burro’s and I’m sure ill treatment does go on by some of their owners however I didn’t see anything myself. The Burro’s are licensed and apparently regularly inspected by the jurisdiction of the Townhall and there is supposed to be a protection group set up to ensure their wellbeing.
take in the views to the distant sea...
by willy_wonka
as mentioned previously, a walk to the top of the cliff to see the virgen de la pena will offer the fantastic views over the countryside to the sea. the views are fantastic, especially as the day draws to a close.
to those who are more sporty, mijas is also well known for its cliffs, and thus its rockclimbing. with an elevation of around 450 metres, its not hard to see why the rockclimbers come here!
Bullring in Mijas
by karenincalifornia
Mijas has a bullring in the most unusual location - at the top of the hill overlooking the sea. We didn't see it the first time we walked around, but then learned you access it by going through the bull fighting museum. This bullring is still used today for bullfights.
After visiting the very large Ronda bullring, we were surprised at the tiny size of the Mijas bullring. I guess there is no such thing as "regulation-sized bull rings", like soccer, baseball and football fields, tennis courts, golf courses, Olympic swimming pools, etc. etc.
In this bullring, you might even get a picture of El Presidente!
