Travel Tips for Mijas

CHURCH OF SAN SEBASTIAN - XVII

by LoriPori

The XVII century CHURCH OF SAN SEBASTIANwas rebuilt from ruins thanks to charity. A plaque on the outside of the Church reads:
"This Church was erected in the late 17th century and has since undergone many reforms. It has a single nave covered with a ridgepole structure and a square main chapel covered by a domed vault resting upon pendetives with moulded plasterwork and scrolled plaques. At the head of the high altar is a groin-vaulted niche with a fresco of small angels dating from the 18th century. The simple portico at the eastern entrance, incorporates a round arch framed by pilasters, an entablature and divided pediments , the whole facade crowned by a belfry gable with a single opening.

Rock climbing IN the village??!!! Yesss

Rock climbing in Mijas!

From Malaga take the National Road 340 (N-340) heading to Fuengirola, there you have to take the Road to Mijas Pueblo which is the little village you see north up in the mountain. The area is IN the village and it very easy to reach.

Bouldering in Mijas - Difficulty: 5.11b - 7a

Mijas Rock Climbing As I only free-climb (Nutter that I am) .... I suggest you inform yourself and bear in mind the heat and take enough chalk

Explore on foot

by karenincalifornia

The best way to get to know Mijas is to explore it on foot, and away from the busiest streets. This picture shows a typical Mijas street in the residential area. This has all the hallmarks of Mijas: white washed buildings, wrought iron balconies, tile streets with mosaic designs, narrow streets leading up the hill. Some of these streets have shops on the first floor, and once you get away from the busy parts of Mijas, you'll find shops that are frequented by locals, not tourists. Take a look through these shops to experience the "real" commercial and social heart of Mijas.

Shrine to Our Lady, Virgin de la Peña

by yumyum

Everyone will visit this pilgrim site in its prime location to see the Virgin de la Peña in the former ermite's cave.

The cave was dug out by a brother of the Carmelite order from 1656 till 1682. There is also a sacristy. You are allowed to take pictures inside but NOT of the the rosaries hanging to your right when you enter.

Just outside there is a plattform to enjoy the views of the Mediteranean sea and the surrounding landscape. At either end of the platform you will find souvenir shops.

Mirador

by blint

Not far from the bullring, near the church you will find this look out over the pretty hills dotted with rich peoples villas and swimming pools. Down further you will see the whitish, pinkish, orange concrete buildings swarming around the coast, which make up the tourist town of Fuengirola. Saving the view is the magnificent Mediterranean sea stretching out to the horizon.

When I went it was an overcast rainy day so I didn't see it at it's best, but I'm sure that on a sunny day the sea looks amazing. It's a shame that in my photos the sea looks as grey as the sky. I can assure you on other days it is bright blue.
