Travel Tips for Mijas
SHRINE OF LA VIRGEN DE LA PENA
by LoriPori
Hidden away in a corner of the town ( to the right of the Burro Taxi ) you will find the 16th century SHRINE OF LA VIRGEN DE LA PENA . This shrine holds the image of the Virgin of the Rock, the patroness of Mijas. It is set in the rock by the El Compas vantage point. According to legend the image of the Virgen was hidden during five centuries and was found in 1586 by a builder, the father of two shepherd boys who were led to the hiding place by a dove.
Almendras Garrapinadas
by karenincalifornia
Don't miss the street vendor in Mijas Pueblo selling the “almendras garrapiñadas”, hot sugar cinnamon almonds. They are so delicious when they are hot and smell so heavenly! Good cold, too. This vendor does the same thing with peanuts, too. You'll find this vendor on Calle de los Canos, just above the main plaza.
Museo Taurino
by blint
In the same square I mentioned above you will find this archway which to me was interesting enough to take a photo of but little else as it advertises the bullfighter's museum. I will warn you now that I am very anti bull fighting. I do not think it is a 'cute' Spanish tradition or at all endearing in anyway. It is cruel and bloody. I know many Spanish people argue it is art or culture but I disagree. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions though.
Having said that I will now supply you with details of the Museum so you can make your own mind up if you come here:
OPEN:
Winter - Mondays-Sundays from 10.00h to 14.00h, and from 15.00h to 18.00h
Summer - Mondays-Sundays from 10.00h to 14.00h, and 15.00h to 20.00h
Inside you will see photos of bulls being slaughtered by famous bullfighters and also trinkets and clothing from famous taurinos such as Joselito.
You can also enter into Mijas small bullring.
Virgin of the Rock Shrine
by Jim_Eliason
Legend has it that this Statute of the Virgin Mary dates back to pre-Moorish times and was hidden and forgotten for 5 hundred years until rediscovered in 1586. The statute looks no more than 100 years old at worst
The Shrine of our Lady "Los Remedios".
by Regina1965
There is a tiny church at one end of Mijas called The Shrine of our Lady "Los Remedios" in Spanish "Nuestra Senora de los Remedios" also known as the Santana church. It dates back from the 18th century. It is so tiny that there is only room for one row of pew. You will have to walk for a while to find this church and we met some tourists who, like we, had no idea where they were at this point. So we had to ask locals for directions.
This part of Mijas reminded me of an "unspoilt" Spanish village.
The shrine is number 10 on the map.
