Travel Tips for Mijas

Colourful

by blint

This scene was one of my favourite views of the town. The Green and blue tables and chairs really stand out against the white walls lined with flower pots.

I was lucky enough to see it not at eating time when all the tables would have been full.

The beauty of Mijas and other white villages is the fact that any colours really stand out against the white, making stunning imagery round every corner. Maybe the blue and green tables and chairs wouldn't have looked as nice in another backdrop.

Development

by blint

As you can see from the photo, not all in Mijas is neat and tidy. You can see cables and wires swinging from one building to the next in a precarious fashion and rather unsightly to say the least. No care is taken to make things safe and tucked away.

Around Mijas and the Costa del Sol, dotted like dandruff throughout the hills you will see a lot of development which was probably constructed without planning permission.

They are placed willy nilly covering the hills with no thought to where it is best to built or not. Also for the people living in these houses it may mean that the roads to their houses are unfinished or that they aren't on the main water supply.

Spain got carried away with the tourism explosion and failed to control development around the coast and mountain villages.

San Sebastian

by toonsarah

In the centre of the village is the pretty white church of San Sebastian, its present appearance dating from its restoration in the second half of the 17th century. This is a typical Mudejar church, "Mudejar" being a term that refers to Spanish architecture of the 13th to the 16th century, which combines Moorish and Gothic styles.

Inside, this small church has a peaceful atmosphere emphasised by the rather plain white walls. These contrast with the ornate altar and cupola above it, which is decorated with rococo plaster. Behind the altar we saw a large statue of Christ carrying the cross. Stacy (Beach_dog) explained that it is traditional for Spanish churches to have a different statue for each day of Holy Week, and these are paraded through the town each evening during that week.

How The Burro Taxi Started

by keeweechic

The idea of the Burro Taxi was brought about during the 1960’s by constant requests by tourists to have their photos taken with the burros of local workers who were returning to their homes after a day of work The owners were tipped for this experience and soon found it was very profitable. They were able to earn more than they would in the fields and this was effortless and so the burro taxi service was started.

Miniature Museum

by karenincalifornia

This museum was a fun diversion in the afternoon while the rest of the town was taking it easy. The museum is housed in a box car and has an amazing collection of the tiniest works of art - like that last supper on a grain of rice, dressed up fleas, Lincoln's head on a pinhead. We were amazed that such tiny things could be painted or carved, and even more amazed that anyone would have the patience to do so.

The cost of admission is reasonable - 3 Euros. This is such a unique display. You're unlikely to see anything else like it anywhere else.
