Day tours around Nerja

by Kotecha

We are visiting Nerja for a week during the Christmas of 2007. Are there any interesting places near Nerja which one could visit on an organised tour? How far is Granada from Nerja? Can it be done on a day tour basis? Can some one recommend any reliable companies which operate sight seeing tours?

Hi, If you are interested in exploring some of the more local sights around the mountains etc then I highly recommend a jeep tour. If you visit the Life Adventure website www.lifeadventure.es this will give you some insight. It's a brilliant day out and very entertaining.

El Acueducto del Aguila

by amapola66

Still in perfect condition, El Acueducto del Aguila (The Eagle Aquaduct) is located on the Barranco de la Coladilla or the Cazadores de Maro (Nerja) cliff, close to the N-340 main road.
Some maintain that this is the most beautiful aquaduct constructed during the XIX century.

Built built to carry water to the mills of the old San Joaquín sugar factory in Maro,
the aquaduct comprises four levels of superimposed brick arcades with 38 arches and also features entrance templets on the top storey and a central templet with an inscription reading "Pura y Limpia Concepción" (Pure and Clean Conception").

You can enjoy pleasant walks with stunning views from the Tower of Maro.

A cuban twist at La Cabaña. (Avda Castilla Perez)

by Pauldelabar about La Cabaña

International Tapas Bar.
La Cabaña is a small bar that you could very easily miss albeit being on the main road down to the sea front (Avenida Castilla Perez).

The owner is Cuban and his wife is either French or Belgian (I can't remember which).

The bar has subdued lighting and is long and narrow in shape.

This bar only apears to open in the evenings at the time of writing, from around 7pm. the owners have only had this bar arelatively short time and it is surprising that it is up for sale again already.

Price range:
Good value for money.
Atmosphere:
Not bad.
Theme:
Very Spanish considering the ownership.
Opening hours:

Disabled notes:
Level access but narrow bar. Casual.

Best Italian Food in Nerja

by jaygee about Bella Roma

Undoubtedly the best Italian food in Nerja. The menu is very large covering most of Italy's diverse food but the food is also very good. Good wine list too. The staff are all Italian.

The restaurant is always crowded after 8:00 pm so either come early or be prepared to wait. Seats are quite close together. Outside seating as well as inside.

The standards of the staff I think have slipped a bit over the last year but the food still remains the same.

Half portions of the pasta dishes are available Great pizza and risotto

A day-trip to the gorge at Alhama de Granada

by Bwana_Brown

If you have a rental car and some time to spare, you can even make a day-trip to the spectacular inland gorge at Alhama de Granada. This is another of Spain's many natural attractions, and one that tries to give Ronda a run for its money when it comes to having spectacular gorges in town - but does not quite do it!

We arrived there from Torremolinos at about 1 PM on New Year's Day and were really impressed by the gorge cut into the surrounding countryside by the Alhama River. The weak winter sun was beaming directly down the gorge at us, making it difficult to get decent photos of the quite impressive spectacle but we tried our best. It was amazing to stand on the precipice at the edge of Alhama de Granada and see the river headed straight for town (2nd photo). However, the rock walls won that battle and deflected the river east as shown in the 3rd photo. We really enjoyed our time just taking in the entire scene but, if you wish, you could be part of a group exploring the gorge itself, which can be walked from one end to the other alongside the Alhama River. If you want to return to civilization at the top of the gorge you have a choice of either steep slopes or steps (some of which are carved into the rock face) at several locations in the gorge.

As we continued east, we were amazed at the view we had of Lake Bermejales off in the distance (4th photo), a water reservoir that also serves as a great recreation area. In our case, it took us just over 2 hours to reach Nerja from Alhama (during our second visit to Nerja by way of the outskirts of Granada). However, if you are starting from Nerja, it only takes about 1 hour to cover the 69 km to Alhama de Granada by first travelling west along the Mediterranean shore before heading inland near Velez-Malaga (instead of the 148 km via our unplanned route past Granada). The mountain route from Velez-Malaga is really spectacular (as shown in my 'Torremolinos' page).
