Sunday Shopping

by amberlily

I am visiting Nerja in a weeks time and will be arriving on a Sunday. I have read that the supermarkets are not open on a Sunday. I will be staying in the Burriana Beach area does anyone know of any smaller food shops that may be open so we can get a few provisions

Re: Sunday Shopping

by joninnerja

There is a supermarket called Whim on Burriana that is open seven days a week. You do pay for the convenience however, (it's known locally as Dick Turpin's!) and as a result we only use it in absolute emergencies - Mercadonna on Calle San Miguel in town (Grid # E5 on the the Soltalk map- www.soltalk.com - it's the big red "S!") takes a lot of beating in most people's opinion.

Travel Tips for Nerja

A useful internet cafe

by Bwana_Brown

I'm not really sure what the the internet cafe that we used was called, maybe the Europ@ Web judging from my photo of its exterior. Whatever it was called, it was located only a few hundred feet away from our Hostal Marazul and very close to Plaza Fabrica de los Congrejos where the rough waves of the Mediterranean Sea crashed ashore.

It came in handy a few times, for checking both the weather and emails from home (not to mention VT of course!). The first time we used it was the morning after our arrival in Nerja - to check up on the now deteriorated rainy weather situation. The forecast did not look good for the next few days on any of Spain's coasts within a few hundred miles of Nerja. As a result, we made our decision to pack up and at least head for the wilder and undeveloped Atlantic coast northwest of Tarifa, since we had not yet had a chance to explore there (it turned out to be a great decision!). This internet cafe also came in handy four nights later when we returned to Nerja near the close of our trip. We decided to just wind down and stay in town for two nights without having to think about anything - got caught up on our emails and just chilled out before leaving for one more night on the road in the fantastic 'El Cabo de Gata' area east of Almeria as we prepared to fly back to Madrid. Their rates were not too bad, about the same as all the other internet cafes we tried.

Dont forget to visit Frigiliana

by Beach_dog

A small picturesque village just 10 minutes from Nerja. I would regard it as a must visit place in the region. The small white houses cascade down a steep hillside. It been kept remarkably tidy and no new modern buildings spoil this little village. You really get a feel of what Andalucian life must have been like in the past and will feel you have walked into a time capsule. The village was also the site of a battle in centuries past between the Moors and the Christians, the story of the battle is told in the ornate tiled signs located throughout the village.

Bars and Pool. (San Juan de Capistrano)

by Pauldelabar about El Paso : Prop. - Carmen.

International Poolside Cafe/Bar.
Just outside the centre of Nerja, there is an area called San Juan, just past Capistrano.
Here there is an oasis of bars set around a pool. The pool itself is really for the surrounding property owners use.

One of these busy bars is the El Paso, where food and drinks can be obtained 'Al fresco'.

Glass is not allowed near the pool and the El Paso gets around using plastic glasses by serving drinks in terracotta pots.

Price range:
Good value for money on drinks and food.
Atmosphere:
Very pleasant in the good weather of Summer.
Theme:
Poolside bar. No other theme is necessary.
Opening times:
Lunchtimes until around Teatime.
Disabled notes:
Level access. Casual.

Dancing Chicken

by cwest03 about Palacio del Pollo Asado

Are you looking for something to bring down to the beach for a picnic? Want a good hot meal but don't want to spend a lot of euros? If this is the case bring yourself over to Palacio del Pollo Asado for a fresh hot roasted chicken meal. For just €9 you can get a whole fresh roast chicken right off of the spit in addition to home made potatoes and dipping sauce (ali-oli or hot and spicy). For a bit more you can add a cold beer or soda from their refrigerator. There also sell other variations on the meal as well as 1/2 chickens all for very reasonable prices.

This was a great meal to take back to our hotel balcony overlooking the ocean.

XIX Century Eagle Aquaduct

by jaygee

Have a look at the aqueduct just outside Maro.

The aquaduct was initially built to supply water to the nearby Sugar Factory, or San Joaquin Sugar Mill, there being a tradition of sugar cane plantations and construction of sugar cane mills in the area dating from the XVI century.

It was built under the direction of local master builder Francisco Cantarero and comprises four storeys of superimposed brick arcades with 38 arches. The facade was decorated with a gallery of blind, pointed horseshoe arches in the Mudecar style. The aquaduct also features entrance templets on the top storey and a central templet with an inscription reading 'Pura y Limpia Concepción' (Pure and Clean Conception).

The Factory is long since closed but the aquaduct continues to be used for local communal irrigation.

The view of the aqueduct from the roadside is very impressive but do take care.
