many questions...

by Rutley

I am thinking of going to Nerja for Spanish Lessons (Sept/Oct 2009)
1. I'm 38 years old and traveling alone--will most people be much older than me since it is the off-season? Have heard it is preferred by English Snowbirds!
2. I'm thinking 4 weeks--too long? too short?
3. Are there local outdoor markets? And what about street food (vendors) this time of year?
Any and all responses would be appreciated--thanks!

Very nice little town. Lots of retirees. Personally, I would want to be someplace a little bigger with more going on if I was going to spend four weeks there on my own learning Spanish.

Hi, I went to Nerja in April of last year to learn Spanish. I went to the Escuela de Idiomas, in Nerja, on a coursr for the over 50's. What I found was that the school was full of youngsters, all at varying levels of competance. The lovely thing was that they included us older students in most things that were going on. I was on my own for 2 weeks but found there was always someone to talk to and many things to do.. I stayed in the residence of the school which was perfectly O.K. but for the same price I could have rented an apartment with all the facilities. A visit to the caves is a must!!!!! Go and enjoy yourself, it's a very pretty little town.

Best wishes,

Doug

Donkey refuge in a picturesque village

by amapola66

Based in Fuente De Piedra, close to the famous Flamingo Lake, El Refugio Del Burrito provide a safe haven with wonderful facilities for some of the many donkeys and mules that have faced a hard, and often badly mistreated, life.

Feeding, treating and providing refuge for their ever growing family of donkeys is an enormous commitment and they depend entirely on donations from supporters to continue and expand their vital work in Spain and the rest of Europe.

You will find the refuge situated in the beautiful village of Fuente de Piedra, Antequera. It is housed in a traditional Spanish cortijo (farm), complete with a charming olive grove and traditional buildings, has been turned into a safe haven for donkeys and mules rescued from across Europe. You can meet the residents and learn all their stories as you walk around the grounds, discovering how they are cared for. You can even adopt one at the Visitors' Centre.

This is a perfect way to discover the beauty of the Spanish interior, while enjoying a fun and interesting visit that will also help the donkeys. The nearby Flamingo Lake is famous for the fabulously coloured flamingos that flock to it.

(much of the above text & photo, is taken from the official website of the refuge, link below).

Entrance to El Refugio del Burrito is FREE.
Open daily from 11am until 7pm

To find us, take the road to Antequera from Malaga. Then follow the signs to Seville, taking the A92 motorway. Take the junction 132 to Fuente de Piedra and head into the village, turning left next to the Hotel Conde de la Laguna. Follow the track and take the second left after passing a large house on your right. We are situated at the end of this track.

The Coach & Horses. (Calle Cristo)

by Pauldelabar about The Coach and Horses : Prop. Cath

British Restaurant/Bar.
The Coach and horses is very much a food oriented pub. Tastefully decorated if a bit dated now, there are plenty of tables and bar space with tall bar chairs. Table service is provided to all tables and you are looked after very well.

Guinness is on draught here.

Sky TV music forms the entertainment.

Traditional English food is served and tables are provided outside for al fresco dining.

Price range:
Quite expensive for drinks and food.
Atmosphere:
Quite good for a busy 'touristy' bar.
Theme:
Very 'Olde Worlde' which looks very nice. Looks like an old coaching inn.
Opening times:
From about 10am until 3pm and 7pm till about mid night. Closed all day Saturday.
Disabled notes:
Pretty level access but toilets are small. Casual.

La Torna for good English food

by Pauldelabar about Big Al's (La Torna)

English Cafe - Bar A wide sellection of food is available here, from Bangers and mash to Roast Sunday lunches. Tea and coffee can also be taken here along, of course, with draught San Miguel etc.

Whilst this is listed as a restaurant, everyone is perfectly welcome to drop in just for a beer or coffee or pot of tea.

La Torna has just changed hands (Summer 2005) but the tradition of good food is carried on by the new owners and will continue to be known as Big Al's.

There is a covered terrace to the side where drinks and meals can be consumed al fresco. Waiter service to all tables is available.

San Miguel on draught here. My personal favourite is Steak in Ale pie. It is reasonably priced and you will not go away hungry.

Disabled notes:
Level access and refitted toilets.

Balcón de Europa

by stickynickyuk

One of the most popoular spots within the town of Nerja is the Balcón de Europa, built on the previous site of a 10th century castle, it just hangs over the cliffs and beaches to gain better advantage of the spectactular views.
High arches and trees shade horses and carts that are transport around the town.
Ancient cannons, which once spurned forth pirates and invaders, stand guard and add a touch of history.
The parish church of El Salvadoris beautiful, this is in the same area, its 17th century Baroque-Mudejar which has recently been restored.
